Why do we hate being in possession?

Watching Cape Verde Vs Uruguay there and was blown away by how CV played their game.

Quick passing and making advanced forward movements into their opponents half, not giving a single fuck about playing against players a thousand leagues above them in quality. It was high risk yes, but they got at least some reward out of it and are today the toast of the footballing world.

Compare that to how we set ourselves up against Morocco. There was almost a reluctance to be on the ball but when there was, there was hesitation and a rabbit-in-the-headlights look and before you know it, you've been dispossessed. On top of that, from kick off there's an immediate acceptance to allow the opposition the ball and let them come at you and hope for a counter attack.

This isn't just a go at Clarke. This is systemic through out Scottish football. You see it each and every time a club side is in Europe. Dominated in possession from minute 1 to 90 save the occasional time Celtic or Rangers play a preseason qualifier against some part time landscape gardeners from Albania or Macedonia (but even there they can become undone).

I have zero knowledge of being a professional footballer. The extent of my football experience is playing 5s a few of times a year with workmates for about 40 mins at a time. My overall football IQ is about 2.

But I know at least to be a professional footballer, you need to be accomplished at two things: know how to move with the ball and know how to pass the ball.

Regardless, of what level and the overall quality, I firmly believe you should set yourself to be aggressive in your attacking play and not be afraid to keep possession. Yes, of course you need to be organised and be alert to the ever present dangers your opponent can cause, but Cape Verde prove that if you entrust yourself and your teammates, possession and attacking intent can create positive results.

Why don't we take that approach despite have a century and a half worth of footballing experience?
