Where to start with Doomtown and Pine Box Entertainment
My apologies if this is the wrong sub, I know that these are all technically card games, but they seem very board gamey from what I’ve seen.
I’ve been seeing a few things pop up for a new printing of Doomtown lately, and I think I wanna try it out with my group. The only place I could find it up for sale though is Pine Box entertainment’s web site, where I discovered they ALSO have new card game versions of 7th sea and Pendragon. All three of those IPs are some of my all time favorites in the TTRPG space, and so I suddenly want to try out all three. Not sure where to start though.
From what I can tell, pendragon is relatively new, and just has the one box. 7th sea has a few expansions out but those seem pretty straightforward and are numbered in publication order… but Doomtown, the one that brought me to the site in the first place, is kinda a mess on what I should get first. The expansions are kinda all over the place and I’m not even sure what I should be looking for. I feel like the obvious place to start is that new printing of the weird west edition… but even then I’m not sure if I am supposed to get 2 copies of the base set (like a lot of lcgs used to require) or if I actually need to go further back and try to find a copy of Doomtown Reloaded first. I was looking for a handy buyers guide but I actually haven’t found very many people talking about ANY of those three games.
Which brings me to the more important stuff: for anyone out there who has played these, how are they? How do they stack up against each other? Do they all use the same system but have distinct settings or are they all wildly different games? Are any of them clearly superior to the others?
If they are amazing (and I think they certainly look amazing so far) how come more people aren’t talking about any of these games?
