[FREE] We've made a viking-themed 2D platformer pack!

Hey guys, we just released a free Viking-themed pixel art pack for 2D platformers. Just to download and use. It was part of a challenge to achieve a SEGA vibe with my partner (who made mostly the designs; I'm the animator:) )

What's in it:

  • Modular tileset (platforms, ladders, spikes, cabin, trees, mountains, background)
  • Viking Warrior: idle, walk, jump, fall, attack w/ slash FX, hurt, shield
  • Enemy: idle, walk, attack w/ slash FX, hurt
  • 64x64 px, consistent palette, sprite atlas + animation sheets included
  • Ready to implement!

License: free for personal and commercial use. Credit appreciated, not required. Just don't resell the pack as-is.

Almost done with a free themed tileset – thinking about turning it into a small paid Unity/Godot project. Good idea? How do you spread the word?

Hey everyone! I’m wrapping up a themed pixel art tileset that I’m planning to release for free on itch.io. It’s been a fun side project and I genuinely just want people to use it and enjoy it. I’ve also been thinking about packaging it into a ready-to-use project for both Unity and Godot (think clean scene setup, organized folder structure, maybe some basic example) and selling it at a very low price (like $1–3 range). Basically a “just open and go” version for devs who don’t want to wire things up themselves.
A few questions for the community:

Is this a fair model? Free tileset for everyone, small charge for the convenience layer. I don’t want it to feel scammy or like I’m nickel-and-diming people who just want the art.

Is there actually demand for low-cost engine-ready asset packs? Or do most devs prefer to just download the raw tileset and do their own setup?

How do you promote this kind of work? Beyond posting on itch.io itself, where do you find the best traction : Reddit, Twitter/X, Discord servers, YouTube devlogs? Any tips from people who’ve done this before?
I’m not trying to make a living off this, just covering coffee money and seeing if people find value in it. Any honest feedback is appreciated!
