Transform Helldivers 2 into a Zombie Survival Game

This is a custom ruleset I created for Illuminate Mindless Masses to get that classic zombie horror survival feeling, since sometimes it feels a bit too easy with all of our gear and stratagem options.

So far, I have field tested it solo and with about a dozen or so LFG groups, and everyone has been pleasantly surprised after a mission or two to get familiar with it.

It's one of my favorite ways to play HD2, so I hope you enjoy it too.

  • TLDR
    • No stratagems or resupply allowed except for mission objective items like SSSDs, hellbombs, etc.
    • Only weaponry you would expect in "classic" zombie survival horror games, shows, or movies. No overly sci-fi gear.
    • No stealth gear or special status effect weaponry
    • All map scavenged items are allowed
      • EXCEPT for Arc Thrower because it's just too strong here
    • Reinforcements only allowed at POIs
    • Limit minimap to placing navigation markers, no scanning for enemies
    • Stick together to avoid breaking enemy spawns - the point is tension, not optimizing the fun out of it
    • Start at D1 illuminate mindless masses and go from there
    • Enjoy the Left 4 Dead: Helldivers 2 Edition

Tested the latest patch on my older mid-range PC: DRS and VRS may be worth disabling if you’re having performance issues

I mainly play Helldivers 2 on PS5 Pro, and so far the latest patch has been perfectly fine for me there. I haven’t noticed any real drawbacks in my gameplay. The PS5 Pro was already running the game pretty well before the patch, but if anything, the extremely chaotic scenes that used to push the system harder seem like they may be performing a little better now, presumably thanks to PSSR support with the patch.

That said, I wanted to test the patch on my older PC just to see how it handled the update, especially since I know some players are having performance issues.

My PC specs:

  • Ryzen 5 5600G
  • Radeon RX 6600 8GB
  • 32GB RAM
  • Windows 11
  • AMD Adrenalin driver 25.10.43.10

This was originally a pre-built Best Buy PC, and even when I bought it, it was more of a mid-range system at best. So I was honestly pretty surprised by the results.

At 1440p with FSR3 Quality and High settings, I was getting mostly 40–60 FPS against bots, which are usually one of the more performance-heavy factions for me. This was during chaotic fights with Napalm, 380mm barrages, Eagle strikes, explosions, bots, ragdolls, and all the usual Helldivers chaos. In really intense moments, I would sometimes dip into the 30s, but I never saw it become unplayable. In calmer scenes, I was usually sitting in the 50s and 60s.

The big caveat:

Dynamic Resolution Scaling and Variable Rate Shading both tanked my performance badly.

With either of those enabled, my performance was significantly worse. I was seeing drops into the single digits at times, and overall the game was often 30 FPS or lower. Once I disabled both DRS and VRS, the game became dramatically more stable.

So, just in case this helps anyone else troubleshooting after the patch, beyond the usual advice of updating your GPU drivers, Windows, chipset drivers, and verifying game files:

Try disabling Dynamic Resolution Scaling and Variable Rate Shading.

For my system at least, those two settings were the main problem. With them off, Helldivers 2 is running surprisingly well on hardware that I would not consider especially powerful by modern standards.

Humanely bully the enemy for Democracy

The G-109 Urchin can stuff even the biggest of tyrannical foes back into their Freedom Camp locker.

Edit: For clarity, I mainly use the Urchin as a way to safely protect my tanks or exosuits from surprise chargers, bile titans, and so on - especially when I need to activate a terminal for a minute. This lets me do the objective and avoid accidentally destroying any vehicles. A team setting is where I spend most of my time in the game anyway.

I also like the Urchin for its crowd control usage in choke points since it is 13.5 seconds of intermittent burst stun/stagger in a 4-meter radius.

No hate against any other grenades. I just like the variety that the game offers, and the Urchin is a cool tool for bullying big enemies.

This photo of Eagle-1 in today's war update looks amazing

The visuals in this game are incredible. Just wanted to make an appreciation post about this since we don't normally get to see Eagle-1 like this.

[OC] I'm a LowSodiumHellDiver because I sweat it out on the battlefield

This was around the 2.5 hour mark of my Helldivers 2 cardio stream challenge.

No meme, no exaggeration. I was actually smoked here. Heart rate around 160 BPM while still trying to clear objectives and stay focused. Figured some of you might appreciate the absurdity of turning Helldivers into a cardio workout.

Full stream linked in the clip description.
