I’m just getting into epic collections and I was wondering, do you typically collect full lines or just specific creator runs or year range?

I’m leaning forward specific creators on everything but ASM wanted to hear thoughts and reasons why.

I have only really read modern DC comics but the the Finest collection I really want to branch out to Crisis through the 90s. Can I pick up the first volume of crisis on infinite earths and start there or is there a bunch of backstory I need to read prior?
