Was Luke a uniquely powerful for a Jedi which allowed him to defeat Vader in combat or did Vader’s internal conflict about fighting his own son weakened him enough for Luke to defeat him?
Apologizes if this is been discussed widely before, but I was having a discussion with my friend about why Luke and potentially Leia had to be the ones to defeat Vader instead of potentially another surviving Jedi who were more experienced.
I made the claim that while Luke was decently powerful, Vader had killed countless far more experienced Jedi in his career as a sith and it’s ultimately Luke’s relationship with Vader as his son that compromised him enough for Luke to overcome him in a fight.
my friend feels that sells Luke far too short and that he’s an extremely powerful Jedi in his own right, and the interest that the emperor has in making him his new apprentice over Vader speaks to that.
I'm not particularly interested in the minutiae of power scaling arguments between Luke and Vader, I kind of feel this as more of a narrative question and that would be missing the forrest for the trees, but is there anything that would support any of these interpretations more?
