Your Favourite Optional Rules and Rules Alternatives

The AD&D 2 has tons of official but optional (e. g. proficiencies) or alternative variants of the same rules (e. g. initiative), especially if you use Player's Options. That is good for the adaptation for the individual needs, but I feel a bit overwhelmed with the choices sometimes, so I would want to study the experiences of other DMs. Which optional rules and alternative variants of rules (including PO if you use them) do you use and why?

Experience (AD&D 2)

  1. If a cleric used a weapon outside his or her element preferences during a combat, will he or she receive the experience for the clever actions during the combat, survival in it, etc.?

  2. How to calculate the creature HDs based experience bonus for a fighter correctly? What does '/level' mean at this case?

  3. How do you give the experience for the gladiatorial training participation if do so?

Pre-Generated NPCs in the Modules

How do you work with pre-generated the NPCs listed in the modules? Do you make the more elaborated character sheets for them adding the non-listed parameters if necessary?

The Ship Crew

I continue to develop the seafaring solo campaign (thanks for the previous tips), but a problem appears: the realistic ship crew is about 15 people. I have no such many friendly NPC in my games before and don't know how to show their presence in AD&D without DM-ing not just player but myself too for a big part of game. The player is a seafaring history fan and looks at the crew presence as a necessary thing to feel game realistic. Thanks for the tips.

Pronunciation

How do you read the names in the TSR books that are not phonetically re-spelled or clearly based on English or other real language (e. g. FR Chessenta and Chessenta's cities names but not just them) in your campaigns. It seems there is no common guidelines but want to know about the practice.

AD&D game with One Player

I am making a solo game for a friend (Forgotten Realms version for AD&D 2ed as a setting, the character is a human priestess of Selûne). I have had some experience in AD&D 2ed with several characters in the party as a DM, but no solo games experiences using the system. Is the creation of a usual solo game using AD&D 2ed reasonable? If yes, which aspects are different from the common 'DM + about 4 players' games?

Game Organisation Tips

My friend has requested the 'Age of Discovery style tales' for a solo game. It seem Forgotten Realms is good for that. We want to start at Chessenta, and may be go to the Lake of Steam and Shining Sea. I am very new to the setting, so the tips about the plot hooks, playing the ship and crew, and the good system for the solo gaming are very welcomed.
