Can Mystra stop a wild magic user (specifically a barbarian) from acessing magic the same way she can just strip a weave user of their ability to cast spells?

What kind of map is this?

I found this map in the Forgotten Realms fandom, but the names on the map don't relate to this setting.

Forgotten Realms Novel Checklist Spreadsheet

So, I wanted a checklist of all the Forgotten Realms novels so I can track my reading progress. A quick search did not turn up anything, so I made one for myself. I took all the info from the FA Wiki.

I just wanted to share it with the community. Let me know if I should make any adjustments or if I am missing anything. It is a Google Sheet and you can manipulate how you see fit. Currently it shows what books I have read. Feel free to download and use it for yourself.

I am only up to 68 out of the 303, but I have read the Drizzt books twice, so that is something. I am looking forward to the journey.

How does Menzoberranzen keep up its population?

>! With all the backstabbing and killing around how does it's population keep up? In homeland it mentions there were 20,000 drows in Menzo that doesn't seem like alot 🤔. Also seems like each of the houses only the matron mothers are allowed to have children? As i have yet to hear any of the matron mothers mention about their grand children despite them having a long life span. !<

Menzoberranzan Drow Noble House Timeline

As part of my ongoing project to prepare for a home-game set in Menzoberranzan, I wanted to get a better understanding of the house structure, and part of that is to understand the house rankings over time. I wanted to put it in a nice graphic but the information was so convoluted I had to use this format just to get a handle on everything.

I've included two graphics, the first one is basically just straight canon from the wiki:
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_drow_houses

The second I don't believe contradicts canon but I had to make a lot of assumptions just to get everything on there.

Generally speaking the house order is determined for this list at the end of the year, that means if a house was destroyed in a certain year, they won't show up on the year they were destroyed.

The colors stopped being super relevant after a while, especially on the second graphic, just a shorthand for myself while I was working on this. Generally red meant a house was destroyed, blue meant that it was added to the list, green means the house exited the list but wasn't necessarily destroyed and pink meant that I didn't have a canon place for it. (I stopped keeping up with the colors on the second one as clearly because the information I had was less clear). In at least one case a house showed up and was destroyed in the same year so it ought to be blue and red but I just went with red. Like I said it was convoluted.

I'm still not entirely convinced that everything on this timeline is correct so if you see issues feel free to let me know.

Earthrust Mountains?

Was skimming through the original Draconomicon and read about the dragon worshipers of the Earthrust mountains, which is a location I’d never heard of and can’t find on any maps. I managed to find them mentioned in passing in the Cyclopedia of the Reams, but that also doesn’t say where they are.

Anyone have any idea if they’re mentioned or mapped elsewhere? Or if they were renamed? Or are they just a piece of forgotten lore? Thanks!

Alignment Dynamics: A Physics-Inspired Model of D&D Cosmology

Alignment Dynamics: A 3D Model of D&D Cosmology

Imagine the D&D alignment system as a three-dimensional coordinate system:

 • X-axis: Good (+) ↔ Evil (−)
 • Y-axis: Law (+) ↔ Chaos (−)
 • Z-axis: Power or existential level (mortal → demigod → deity)

This separates two very different kinds of change.

For example, when a celestial falls (such as Zariel), or when a mortal is corrupted by devils, the movement is primarily within the alignment plane (X-Y plane).

By contrast, when a devil becomes a god, it mainly moves along the Z-axis (gaining power). Its alignment may remain Lawful Evil.

I also imagine the Z-axis as something like an energy level in physics. A low-level mortal can change alignment relatively easily, like an outer-shell electron changing orbit. A powerful celestial or archdevil, however, has an extremely stable identity. Changing its alignment would be more like a nuclear reaction than an electronic transition—it requires an enormous amount of "alignment energy."

This leads to an interesting comparison between D&D and Eastern religions. In Buddhism, many protectors of the Dharma were originally evil beings (for example, Hariti). Their power remains, but their moral alignment changes dramatically. One could imagine that this enormous "alignment potential" is transformed into merit (功德). By contrast, D&D devils seem to exploit the same phenomenon in the opposite direction. They actively corrupt mortals, tempt paladins, and even seek to corrupt angels. Instead of transforming that potential into merit, they convert it into soul coins, influence, and power.

This raises an interesting question:

Why does the D&D universe portray corruption much more frequently than redemption? Under this model, large alignment shifts represent large releases of "alignment potential energy." Why do fiends actively exploit this potential, while good deities rarely appear to do the same? Is this asymmetry intentional in D&D cosmology?

What do you think of Sarevok, the villain of the first Baldur's Gate game?

https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Sarevok_Anchev

He is a total badass, and i like that he can be redeemed in Throne of Bhaal.

However the events of the first game show how dumb humans in the Realms are. I mean, why would the aristocrats of Baldur's Gate trust a dude who looks like that? (''Let Sarevok speak'')

Texts from a Dungeon

So I'm not sure if I've ever posted here, but there's a first time for anything right?

I've been actively developing for the last few years a project called "Texts from a Dungeon", inspired by "Texts from Superheroes" but (1) themed for D&D characters, and (2) each character has a stronger personality.

I kicked it off about a month ago, and I have several hundred entries I've put together queued up, posting one a day. It's honestly been the most personally satisfying creative endeavor I've ever done and it's been a lot of fun.

For example, in celebration of today, here's one among the characters in the D&D cartoon...

https://textsfromadungeon.com/chat/GroupChat_July4th1

Anyway, the site is running and posting to multiple social media accounts: BlueSky, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest.

I am always open to suggestions. If anyone wants to see anything in particular, maybe we can put something together.

https://textsfromadungeon.com/

"BOO SAYS THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER CREATED! We can read the words of heroes and villains and know who needs BUTT-KICKING and who needs THANKING! I have already sent it to everyone in my contacts! Boo is very pleased!"

Do they make nice collected editions of Forgotten Realms stories like the pictured Dragonlance books? I feel like the only thing that gets any love book wise is Drizzt. I feel like they're missing out on selling a lot of these old stories in a more premium format.

As much as I love filling a shelf with these classics, you can't beat a big thick boi with a nice cover. On a separate note I picked up a bunch of these at the local thrift store when someone unloaded their entire collection. Its always kind of sad when I see a huge lot of stuff. There was at least a whole other shelf of Warhammer books and modules as well. Thousands of dollars worth of msrp stuff.

Grand Campaign Design

Last week, I posted a chart of faction relations for an adapted multi-module campaign taking place in and around Neverwinter. I've continued to work through some ideas for factions and plots and wanted to give an update to see if anyone had suggestions or feedback.

Still working on the faction plots for a few tiers (really the whole thing is in brainstorm phase). The goal is that the party can stop a faction and avert 3 out of the 4 true apocalypses, but not have it feel like whackamole. To that end, I'm trying to have each plot intertwine in some way with the others.

For instance, the party may stop the cult from summoning Tiamat in Tier 2 by destroying the obelisks. However, to free Neverwinter from the Hells, Asmodeus requires them to destroy Tiamat in the hells, or imprison her more securely (perhaps empowering him in some way).

The idea is that 4 plots are active in Tier 1, 3 plots in Tier 2, 2 plots in Tier 3, and 1 plot in Tier 4. But having them interconnected enough to feel continuous.

Happy to hear any thoughts!

Tearing Down the Wall of the Faithless

I'm working on a campaign as the DM, and I'm curious how y'all would tear down the Wall of the Faithless beyond DM fiat.

In this scenario, a powerful unascended Vecna intends to to tear down the wall and use the ensuing chaos to achieve Godhood. He'll utilize the PCs and generally good aligned NPCs to do the dirty work for him, but I don't know the mechanics of HOW they would tear it down without just... hand waiving a "magic ritual " I want something a little more based on lore than just random DM McGuffin. Killing or incapacitating Kelemvor seems the most logical route, but I don't much like the idea of PCs fighting Kelemvor. This would be early into the campaign too, setting up the main story.

My players aren't familiar with Forgotten Realms lore, so I have some wiggle room here. This can be before Kelemvor tears down the Wall himself, so maybe he's sympathetic to their cause? In my version of Faerun, I very much have the Wall as a cruel punishment to all the unfaithful to include children.

Thanks for any response I get!

How High is the High Ice?

I've been researching The High Ice for a session coming up in my game. My party will likely be attempting to enter from the Anauroch Desert. From what I can tell from descriptions, the desert immediately ends with a giant wall of ice that is the glacier. My question is do you have to climb up the wall or can you just walk onto the glacier. Also, if you have to climb, how high is it? Thanks in advance for your knowledge on the subject.

East of the East

While working on my Unapproachable East campaign, I’ve often found myself on the edges of the Wasteland, particularly in the area that was once Raumathar.

Now, I’ve read the 3.5 books UE and LEoF many times. I’ve never seen a map of ancient Raumathar, though. Does one exist anywhere? I’d like to detail more than Winterkeep, Almorel, and Beacon Cairn.
