She Wanted to Save Her Marriage but Didn’t Want to Let Me Go — Was I Right to End It?

Regardless of the reasons that may lead someone to cheat, how likely do you think it is for a marriage to genuinely become healthy and stable again after the wife had an affair lasting about a year, which was discovered by her husband and only partially confessed?
He seems to have forgiven her, they decided to stay together, and they are attending couples therapy. But is forgiveness actually enough in a situation like this?
The affair was not just about sex. It was a very intense and emotionally involved relationship, with strong feelings, romantic gestures, poetry, gifts, emotional intimacy, and a significant sexual connection.
How can a married couple realistically rebuild trust after something like this? And perhaps even more importantly, how do they recover emotional and sexual intimacy when one partner has shared such an intense connection with another person for such a long period of time?
Can couples therapy and forgiveness genuinely allow them to build a healthy marriage again, or does an affair of this length and intensity inevitably leave a lasting fracture in the relationship?
---
I see them around together and they seem perfectly calm, almost like a completely normal couple. From the outside, you would never imagine what happened between them.
And that's what I struggle to understand. She had an affair with me that lasted, on and off, for about a year. It wasn't just sex: there was a very strong emotional and romantic involvement as well. Her husband eventually found out, and they decided to stay together and work on their marriage.
Now, when I see them, they look like an ordinary couple going about their lives as if everything were normal.
I know that appearances don't tell you what is actually happening inside a marriage, but considering everything that happened, I genuinely find it difficult to understand how they can apparently return to normality so quickly.
Can a couple really look this normal and peaceful so soon after such a long and emotionally intense affair? And does appearing calm together usually mean that they have genuinely moved past it, or can the real work and consequences of infidelity remain largely invisible to other people?
Ciao a tutti,
Ho fatto bene a chiudere?
Grazie a chi vorrà rispondermi.
