This is a heavily modified Hofner Alpha, I’ve posted it before here a long time ago, but not these pics.
Hofner Alpha’s were a very limited run of Hofner top range solid bodies that attempted to get Hofner back on the map during the hair metal days. They didn’t do that. But they’re very well made, handmade in Germany, and pretty much made to order. Have duel output jacks and originally had a kinda super Strat pickup config.
I heavily ‘de-metalled’ this guitar, the mod work was done by TP Customs in London, and the pickups are:
Mojo pickups Sharkfin in the bridge and an old Megatron Gretsch pickup pulled out of a corvette.
Guitar is famously ugly. But there’s something about it I like, maybe just that you don’t see any.
So, this is the first telecaster I’ve owned. And the first fender guitar I’ve ever owned. My prior main guitars have been Gretsch and Hofner. I was after a 50’s style tele really, but there was a really good deal on the AVii 63 that made it the same price as the Vintera line. So I figured it was worth it.
A little while ago I picked up a lollar special T bridge pickup. I’m currently undecided on if sticking the lollar in the bridge position is a good idea.
The fender 63’ pickups are good, perhaps a bit thin compared to what I’m used to.
If there’s anyone out there who has experience with the AVii 63’s and with the lollar special T sound I’d be interested to know if:
It’s just a preference thing 50’s vs 60’s style or if the Lollar special T will be a step up quality wise from the AVii pickups generally?
Surely a boring question. But maybe someone else out there is considering or has done something similar.
