TIL trucks are actually cheaper to insure than cars

Even working in insurance I always assumed trucks would cost more to cover. Bigger price tag, bigger repairs, bigger vehicle. Turns out I was wrong. Based on quote data I just saw from this month, the average pickup runs $263/month for full coverage vs $317 for a car. About 17% less. On state minimum the gap is $132 vs $160.

When you look at the data it actually makes sense. Heavier vehicles tend to absorb crashes better for the people inside them, which factors into how risk gets priced. There's obviously more to it than just size but that's a big part of why the numbers land where they do.

Made me curious, has anyone here factored in insurance costs when deciding between buying a truck or a car?
