Update : I am alive and doing much better

A week ago I made a very very poor decision and tried to take my life. It was a huge regret. I immediately went to the hospital and was put in a pavillion, I’m so happy to say I am alive and doing so much better!!! The therapy really helped and I got my meds situation for proper outside care. Everyone in there was so so nice and kind and we laughed a ton, I’m so blessed to be alive

If my chronic illness symptoms return I’m going to end my life

I (20F) have suffered from severe illness pretty much forever. I had cancer as a kid and then severely serious life altering conditions in my young adult / teen years. My symptoms were debilitating (one being symptoms from POTS), I fainted and blacked out so often I was barred from driving. I couldn’t even leave my house. I couldn’t eat (aside from my feeding tube), I could barely get myself to the couch daily. My conditions (yes, plural) were “treated” a year ago by an extensive 8 hour brain and spine surgery. It was extreme and morbid, my skull was fused to my spine, and I was told there was no guarantee I’d be fixed. When I woke up, however, things were different.

For over a year my symptoms have been almost entirely gone, I’ve lived with minor headaches here and there but nothing horrible. I’ve FELT AMAZING! That being said, lately I’m worried. I got into a school I had worked really hard for and even got into a physical program (albeit with some accomodations ofc). I’ve been so unbelievably excited to finally start my life, but the last few weeks I’ve been struggling with standing for periods of time (classic POTS). If my symptoms return, I can’t move off to my school. If they return, I will be forced back into the life I was living. The idea of not getting to work or even go to school rips my heart out. If my symptoms come back, and this isn’t just a “I’m stressed to be moving out and that’s causing these symptoms” then I think I will end my life.

I had zero quality then, and if they do return, I will have zero quality now. I hate chronic illness. I hate it, it has taken so much from me my entire life, I’ve never gotten to not be sick. I just hope it’s a fluke and my condition isn’t relapsing :(

EDS experience with Dr . Henderson? Anyone else have a horror story?

Hi all!

I want to clarify I have already had a decompression + fusion with a lovely neurosurgeon in New York. Prior to seeing him, however, I went to Dr Henderson in DC. I had a… weird experience. At the time (this was several years ago btw) I was DESPERATE for any kind of relief, so desperate I would’ve fused my own neck probably lol. We were prepared to just full send it and pay for my surgery even though he doesn’t take insurance. He was an “EDS specialist” and claimed to specialize in rare and severe cases which was what I had.

First off, he tried to sell us his book several times. A book about a condition I already had (his whole EDS symptoms book) :/ when we went to his office, there were pictures of him EVERYWHERE, it was weird and came off as unprofessional but still we didn’t care, maybe people just loved him. He immediately went into his spiel about how he “invented” his own hardware that he uses and that he’s world renowned. I thought “great! He’s a good surgeon!”. He continued in how he’d do the surgery, blah blah, and then… hugged me and said we’d “get through this”. I’ve never met this guy btw, I’m not a touchy person, this was just weird for me, alarm bells started sounding in my head that something was off.

Me and my mom got the estimate for surgery and he said he could have me on the table within the NEXT MONTH, literally like 2 WEEKS AWAY. He wasn’t going to follow up once more or anything, just immediately give me the surgery. We left to think about it and went back to the hotel where I promptly told my mom I had this really messed up feeling in my stomach. Come to find out he had lawsuits against his hardware, among other fairly intense reviews stating horrible things. I trusted my gut and we ended up going to someone MUCH better, but did anyone else have this experience?

I’ve had people who’ve met him and had a great surgery but his methods almost seemed… predatory? I mean first the no insurance is crazy but it feels like he just wants to feed on desperate people willing to do anything. What have yalls experiences been with him if you’ve seen him?

Over a yr post fusion + decompression

A year since I had the hardest surgery of my life, 6 months since I had my feeding tube removed, and 19 years since I was diagnosed with cancer. I think I’m done being sick now lol

19 years ago today I was diagnosed with cancer. Today I’m healthier than ever

I’ve undergone over 100 surgeries, 40+ feeding tubes, brain and spine surgery, medical testing, a lifetime of hospital visits, but today at age 20 it’s like I’ve never been sick in my life 🥹 here’s to 19! And many many more years celebrating a life without disease!

EDIT TO ADD!! this is a picture of me that was taken after my brain surgery to celebrate my scar. The beads around my neck are a program called beads of courage, it’s for severely ill children, I blanked out my name on them lol
