Love the books, show feels weird?

Anyone else feel like the show is kinda uncanny? Like, really unnatural flow of dialogue and scene sequences? It kinda feels like a hallmark show or Disney channel movie. This isn’t the first time I’ve felt this way with book adaptation shows. I think back to young adult romance shows from the 90s and aughts and modern shows aren’t capturing a sense of genuineness that those had. I loved the off campus books and think the actors are gorgeous and talented so I don’t think this has anything to do with how I’m feeling. I just can’t tell if it’s the screenwriting that’s the issue or the set design/lighting. But something always feels a smidge “off” even if still entertaining (this is not a hate post!!)

Mods please delete if not allowed!

I’ve been a co-admin for a Discord book club for 5 years. We are a cis female, non-binary, or transwomen only space.

Since it’s a private group, we welcome new members on an occasional basis and would love open it up to add around 10 more members this year.

Here are some details on how it works:

We already have about 30 people in the club.

Discussions are all hosted online through Discord.

Admin post a theme for each month. Members volunteer to nominate titles and we vote between 6 choices that are chosen by randomly selected members. Then we vote between the top 2 choices.

Our May book is: Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kushino and the theme for May was “Spring Cleaning: an unread book you already own 🌷”

Some previous titles: Project Hail Mary, Love Theoretically, Alchemy of secrets, Song of Achilles, Belladonna, Yellowface, Good Material, The God of the Woods, Ninth House

We discuss the book we’ve read the following mid month in a designated chat. This is done through a live chat in the Discord. An admin hosts the discussion. There are usually 6-7 discussion starter questions posted and the live chat goes for about an hour. Even though it’s a live chat, the channel stays up for anyone to respond in at a later time. There are also chapter chats set up to discuss the book throughout the month we’re reading it.

The discord is full of other chats as well like “gaming” “food” “taylor swift” “art and crafts” and so many more. It’s such a great community. Admins also host monthly and annual reading challenges which are super fun and can earn prizes.

Please DM me if you are interested!
