I’ve been listening to some TMBG demo tapes, and I discovered that some of the demos sound different than the final version (You’ll Miss Me, Don’t Let’s Start), whilst others are basically the same (I Hope That I Get Old Before I Die, (She Was A) Hotel Detective, Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head). Some demos were literally just copied over to the album (Toddler Hiway, Rabid Child, Alienation’s For The Rich).
Whilst listening to the final releases, I also discovered that the final versions don’t sound as good/catchy as the demos. For example, after getting used to the 1985 demo versions of When It Rains It Snows and The Biggest One, I thought they were catchy songs, but when I listened to the final versions of those songs, the final version sounded a bit half-assed, ya know what I mean? Though, it’s not always like that. Sometimes it’s the opposite (It’s Not My Birthday, The Famous Polka).
It’s probably because I basically binge-listened to the demo tapes, coz when I think of a certain TMBG song (You’ll Miss Me, (She Was A) Hotel Detective), I imagine the demo versions of that song.
Is there anyone who also thinks this, and are there any other demos like that?
