I’m tired of the bastardization of Judaism into a luxury aesthetic, a status symbol, or an aspirational lifestyle brand.
Jewish rituals, traditions, and customs are not meant to be marketed as luxury goods. A $15,000 sheitel, a $40,000 Pesach program, a bris that costs more than your nanny’s annual salary, designer Tiffany & Co Judaica, and extravagant displays of religious observance can sometimes blur the line between meaningful practice and a display of wealth.
I believe we should have nice things. There is nothing wrong with wanting comfort, beauty, or to celebrate Jewish holidays in a meaningful way. Judaism has always valued hiddur mitzvah - beautifying mitzvot - and creating a beautiful Shabbat or holiday experience can be deeply meaningful.
But I’m tired of pretending that certain aspects of Jewish life aren’t sometimes being used as markers of status, exclusivity, and wealth. When religious practice becomes something people feel pressured to “keep up with the Cohens,” we risk losing the humility and spiritual depth at the core of these traditions.

Question for the cultural anthropologists of this sub...
Why is the Upper East Side so much more influencer-y than the Upper West Side?
I've always thought of the UES as having more of an "old money" reputation, while the UWS is often stereotyped as being a little more "new money". If anything, wouldn't influencers fit in more with the latter?
Instead, it feels like the UES has become influencer central (pilates studios, matcha, brand pop ups) while the UWS has a much less trendy, online vibe.
Is this just my perception, or is there an actual historical/cultural reason the UES became the mecca for NYC influencers?
And if the sole provider stopped contributing financially, would the marriages really continue to flourish?
There’s no context about the person - their age, gender, the nature of the challenge, personality, hashkafa, or anything else that would help someone make a meaningful suggestion. The only information provided is that they’re Jewish? How is anyone supposed to make a Shidduch?
Ahh.. shut-shaming women because they didn't marry as teenagers is certainly a choice
