What do you wish you had done or not done?
I’m planning my first wildlife pond. I’d love to learn from your experiences please. Any pearls of wisdom for a newbie starting from scratch?
Wildlife needs a temporary home
Hello. I’m planning our first wildlife pond which we’re hoping to start work on in September. I have an old koi pond which will need to be drained before the new pond work starts. There are a few newts and a couple of frogs in there. What’s the best way to provide for them during the build? It will take weeks as it’s part of larger garden projects.
I have an old doggy paddling pool that could be used. Any advice? Thanks in advance.
Cheeky little visitor
Big Ron (sorry, predictable) is still scampering about. Usually too fast to catch on camera. This was not more than 3ft from a sleeping dog. Brave.
Update from the mouse larder
Some of you might’ve seen my post a couple of weeks back asking ‘what’s eating my brassicas?’…turns out it was a mouse. And now the little bugger is tucking into my squash. I’ve run out of good will for this critter. Tips for deterring mice welcome.
Pest control services
We sometimes see a mouse pop in or out of this hole in the decking. Hopefully this chap is keeping their numbers in check 😬
What is eating my brassicas?
This is my 3rd lot of brassicas. The 1st lot went the same way as this one, a whole bed in two days. The 2nd lot were had by caterpillars, this lot have all lost at least one leaf (if not many leaves!) down to the stem overnight. What’s doing this so I deploy the right defensive tactics!
Thanks
Edit to add: they are netted.
Seed sowing advice
First year veg grower. I’ve had terrible germination rates. I want to do some more sowing this weekend and looking for your tips please.
What ‘potting mix’ do you use? I’ve tried mixing in vermiculite, perlite, or straight from the bag (two different brands of seed starting mix). No clear winners. I even sieved the first few batches but it made no difference, not bothering with this anymore I don’t think.
Also I can’t seem to get watering right. I think I drowned my earlier sowings, but now the weather is warmer than when I started back in March…does that mean a germinating seed needs more water like a plant might? Or is overwatering still a possibility?
If you’re in the UK now and sowing into trays, where are you keeping them? Is the greenhouse too hot (I feel like my last sowings, a few days before the heatwave, were too hot in the greenhouse).
Thanks in advance
Noisy (owl) neighbours
Hi there,
I have some very noisy owls where I live…I’m so curious to know what they are, and if they are going to call like this year round as I might need to invest in some decent earplugs 😂 Every night they seem to circle our garden for a good while, using the either the apex of the roof (above my room) or the balcony rail for a rest spot. They are so loud…and here I am awake again at the witching hour.
They squeak, rather than ‘hoot’
I’m in the Uk on the Welsh border.
I tried to post a video of the sound a few weeks ago but it got stuck in moderation.
Can anyone ID by sound that might be able to help? I’ve watched lots of YouTube but couldn’t ID them even though the sound is very distinctive.
Thank you!
Rabbits and wildflowers
Hello all,
This is my first summer in a new house and the garden is beautiful. We’re in a very rural area and there are loads of rabbits around.
There’s a dry border at the back of the garden with a slight slope. Not much growing there and there’s a very wild patch of ground behind (hawthorn/elder/nettles etc). I was thinking of trying a wild flower border for next year, mostly because it’s a big area and I don’t have much budget, a seed start will be a winner.
Any ideas about how that might mix with rabbits. Much of the planting that is in and established (elsewhere in the garden) is fine, anything young, lush or low growing is being munched. I planted some echinacea at the weekend thinking ok…tough leaves, slightly hairy…they should be ok, but they’ve eaten the lot.
Would a wildflower border stand a chance?! 😁 Thanks in advance!
Plum tree pruning advice
I moved to this house 6 months ago. At the time I thought it was an apple tree and gave it a light prune in Feb (oops). I took out one of 3 uprights that’s appeared to be competing for leader though I could already see an old cut where that had been done before. I also cut back another ‘straight up’ branch or two. It’s sent up two whips where I took out a leader.
What could I realistically do this summer to improve things? I’m in the UK. Grateful for any tips.
Bees in my compost
I was turning this pile today and found bees nesting in the middle. How long might they be around for? They’re hogging a bay 😂
Compost kit…what is worth buying?
This my first ever composting set up. Never had a garden big enough to warrant it until 6 months ago. We set up this 3 bay system around Feb time but clearly this garden is going to generate more waste than anticipated. The left is full, just started on the middle, the right is stuff that needs chopping up. I don’t have more composting space without giving up garden which I’d rather not do. There are also two darleks (full) in the veg garden.
About to buy a pitchfork for turning as my garden fork pretty much just bounced off the pile.
Any other purchases work making? I’d like to try and get some heat/speed. I think I’m going to invest in some kind of chipper - any recommendations? (I’m in the UK). Is a thermometer worth it? What about one of those things that you twist into the middle?
Any other tips to heat things up? I’ve asked the hubby to make his contributions but I’m not sure he’s doing it ever so regularly.
Suggestions welcome.
BTW the grass clippings are spread out (ish) to dry and then some on the compost and the rest in a pile to the left of this pic. There is a large old grass pile there which is full of red worms which I add a shovel of to the compost bay every couple of weeks.
Thanks in advance for any tips!
Can I walk on this roof?
This is the flat roof/skylights above my kitchen (seen from upstairs bathroom window). I really want to clean these skylights…is it safe to stand on the roof do we think?! 😬
