r/WildlifePonds
I welcome all wildlife to my pond, even if they have a pointy end.
I got an idea when I saw a few species of mud daubers trying to find mud around my pre-formed pond. I floated a piece of raw cedar siding and sprinkled it with dirt. The wood wicks enough water to keep the dirt wet and now I get to watch these delicate waisted ladies.
First time seeing our new neighbour 🐸
Removing a small amount of duck weed this morning , filling the pond up too, and finally saw our first frog and one of the newts came for a surface chill. It was so exciting, really hope they’re comfy and content in the home we’ve made for them. We live in Worcestershire in the west mids, UK.
First 5 Days
I put this pond in last week and have been watching it cycle over the last few days. Ive got a big range of plants both in and around the pond that will take some time to grow in. I've already have insects visiting to drink and have seen a bird drink as well!
We did stock with a couple snails, ghost shrimp, and Im waiting on some Least Killifish for mosquito control. Really looking forward to seeing progress over the next couple months.
Bee Watering Station
Has anyone tried these in their pond?
Raised marsh bed
Progress update on my London barrel pond, about a month in now - still lots of mozzies/gnats and algae but waiting patiently for the interesting stuff. Would love some dragonflies/damselflies but birds are the real goal. I’ve put together a marsh bed alongside it with a mini bucket pond, hoping the extra habitat will help - might be running before I can walk but it was always part of my plan. I’ve added a mini solar pump to the mini pond but will try keeping the big one standing.
I know raising it off the ground isn’t ideal but with the space we have I could only put it on the gravel in that corner. Has anyone done anything similar before?
Any suggestions for improvements welcome - thinking about adding a pile of wood and sticks behind the bed to work as a ladder.
New Wildlife Pond Advice
Needing advice been at my wildlife pond for 2 weeks done some of my research on each plant I have.
Should my plants be deeper within the ponds water?
thanks!
My grandbabies. Is it usual to have this many tadpoles? Because I feel like this is a fuck ton.
I had one male tree frog last year. So a played a looping track on speaker this year with a bunch of tree frogs calling. Then I got two more!! And then shortly after fuck tons of babies.
I'm wondering if this is usual for the amount in the pond. Cuz like I know they lay a ton of eggs, but like omg so many!!!
Grass Snake in my little pond!
Was just about to top up my little garden pond when I spotted something swimming!
Just a bit worried it’s trapped. I have rocks around the edge for the frogs to jump out but not sure if a snake can!
I made a dock for my (new) wildlife pond
bought a house and found this pond buried in the back, dug it up, filled it, stuffed it with some plants and I’ve just made a little dock! it’s only been a few weeks but it really makes me smile seeing it out in my small urban garden.
Please enjoy this baby robin learning how to bathe! This is day 5 of my pond.
What is this in my pond??
New pond, still murky and sorting itself out as you can see - so far we’ve only had (LOADS) of mosquito larvae show up so I’ve been checking every day hoping something new will come along to eat them!
This morning I saw this weird thing swimming around, I can’t find it and it’s strange fluffy white head on any identification charts - anyone know what we’ve got??
(Edit: also just noticed watching it back, at about 00:06 its tail seems to hit some other darker thing that swims off under the water? can anyone ID that either??)
Obligatory first frog post
Teeny, tiny frog. I’m so content to see him! SE PA.
Absolute unit of a (non-aquatic) visitor last night
Left autumn leaves in the pond over winter, causing the water to become cloudy/grey/stagnant. Recently added back a pump to get some oxygen, and bought some hornwort, but not sure if I should now stop the pump to let the pond recover on its own?
As the title said, the leaves that were left in there since last autumn must have overwhelmed the pond, bad anaerobic smells anytime the water was disturbed and cloudy, bacteria-looking water. It's since recovered slightly since adding the pump which turns on for a few hours at night and during the day. I threw some hornwort and watercress in there the other day, and now I'm not sure if I should stop disturbing the water with the pump and just let it do its thing. Any advice is appreciated! Thank you
I've trimmed back the first flourish of geraniums around the pond (they really take over!) but I'm wondering if I should trim the pond mint and iris also now? UK North facing pond
We may be poor in wealth, but we are rich in frogs!
The amphibian mob is gearing up to go hunting for the evening. They patrol our raised beds with utmost dedication.
Yesterday I saw a frog eat a bee
Sitting by the pond I saw a disturbance in the water, it was a bumblebee in a bit of trouble. There's lots of low hanging red clover by the pond and the little fella must have slipped and got a bit wet. No problem, was just about to get up to give it some emergency assistance when a frog popped into view and swallowed it!. I never knew they are bees!
Happy to have both frogs and bees knocking about near the pond so not complaining, just suprised!
No pics of the event, just the pond 🙂
Pond plants?
Built my first ever pond in my backyard! Extremely proud of it- wanting to attract frogs and dragonflies. Where do I get plants for my pond and what kind should I look for? I have some duckweed but what else?
