Would using swamp cooler runoff to fill a pond be safe for wildlife?

Would using swamp cooler runoff to fill a pond be safe for wildlife?

So I have a swamp cooler (evaporative cooler) with a minor defect that leaves the water constantly trying to fill instead of only filling when the level drops too low. It's untreated well water, and it doesn't have anything added to it from running through the cooler. It just flows over some mesh mats then pools at the bottom of the water pan.

I just set up a hose and rain barrel under the cooler to catch the excess water and have it run downhill instead of pooling on the dirt and creating a swamp by my house, but im thinking I could maybe have the hose feed into a pond shell my grandma never used and make a little pond for the local frogs and birds instead.

Before I do that I wanna be sure there isn't something about this setup that would end up poisoning the local critters that swim or drink in it.

[OC]Manipulator as extension of foot?

(my own drawings, second drawing based off a photo I found on Pinterest that I couldn't find any attribution for)

I find the structure of some insect feet very interesting, the way there's the "base" of the leg, and then an extension with claws on them. I'm considering adding a variation of this to my alien sophonts (mostly arborea and between squirrel and housecat in size) but with the extension ending in a small pincer for manipulating instead of basic claws.

I'm trying to find the balance between "this is visually interesting/obviously came from a different evolutionary lineage from Earth" and "this is a mechanically feasible organism", so I'm exploring different body plans, especially their limbs.

(I have a copy of the Principals of Animal Motion, but it's really dense in unfamiliar terminology and I'm having a hard time getting through it, so I thought having direct input on my ideas would be more immediately helpful)

Moist side now has leaf litter! (Sorry for bad pics)

I collected a bunch of dried leaves from outside, now the moist end has soil, spag moss, bark, aaand leaf litter!

Most of the leaves were from a maple tree I think? It had pale bark and had dropped plenty of big, three-pointed leaves. Other leaves mixed in were catolpa, persimmon, oak, manzanita, and a bit of dried wild oat grass.

I also taped some aluminum foil onto the mesh over the moist end, to help keep it more damp, and to keep it darker when the grow light is on. I also got a cheap puck light to stick above the tank to provide light when the grow light is off. I taped a pink sticky note over it to make it less harsh/bright.

Are there any leaves I should avoid adding to an enclosure?

Going to add extra leaf litter to my isopod tank, but am wondering if there are any kinds of leaves I should avoid giving them?

I'll probably just get some oak leaves from the ground since they're abundant, maybe pick and dry some leaves from a catolpa near my house for something bigger.

My new tank! (I have no idea what I'm doing)

I spent basically all evening sourcing dirt, plant matter, rocks, and dead tree bark from around my house, then using an aspirator to collect some springtails and isopods to put in my tank. They have plenty of dead leaves and grasses to eat, lots of places to hide, an antler and a raccoon skull I found at work as a source of calcium, a glass baking dish full of rocks acting as a water source, aaand I have a grow light (on a day/night timer)! So I'm hoping I can have some plants sprout up from the dirt I collected and make it a proper ecosystem!

The mesh top should provide good air flow, but I'm wondering if I should try to seal at least half of the mesh to keep moisture in better?

And maybe also if I wanna have standing water, I should considering a tiny pump and filter to avoid algae growth?

I just wanted to at least get the ball rolling on making the dirt good by letting all the detrivores do their thing.

So excited I have a place for a tank now!

(reposting cause my OG post was labeled NSFW? Don't know if I did that on accident or if it was automatic but I'm trying again here)

I got rid of an old TV me and my SO don't use anymore and it freed up this shelf nook thing, after cutting out one lip of it I was able to barely slide in this old 50 gallon mesh sliding lid tank I had sitting in my mom's yard for a few years.

I can't wait to get some dirt and leaves and plants in here, add a grow light, and make a tiny little ecosystem for some locally caught pods <3

(Also I checked and all the isopod species in my area are introduced species, so catching them won't break any native wildlife regulations)

What are good resources to learn about animal musculature/ambulation?

I want to learn more about how animals work mechanically, how muscles and tendons work together to create the range of movement that suits said animals lifestyle.

I've been struggling to come up with a sophont creature design that feels "right" to me. I feel like I can't square what I want from it aesthetically and what I want its evolutionary history to be, I think having a better understanding of how animals move and manipulate their environment would help me find the path forwards.

Moss/live plants in an isopod enclosure?

So isopods like dark places, but moss needs UV light to photosynthesize and stay alive.

If I wanted to get some moss from outside to put in an isopod enclosure, could I keep it alive without torturing the isopods?

Id love to try and keep some sort of plant life alive in an isopod enclosure, maybe that'd be more akin to a terrarium? But since my home is kept very dark (SO gets headaches from bright light) I think I'd need to add a UV light of some kind to keep any photosynthesizing stuff alive.

Video where neighbor tried to steal OPs cat?

Trying to find the Oz Vault vid where one of the reddit stories is that a neighbor tried to steal OPs Siamese cat by taking it to her house and bleaching the dark parts, but then the cat scratched the hell out her hand and ran back to OP.

Question wrt one of the kills in "As Above So Below"

So, spoilers for the movie obviously.

I'm wondering if the way >!Papillon!< was killed (>!buried upside down in the dirt with just his lower legs sticking out in the dirt!<) was a literary or historical reference? Like was it an execution method, a torture from Dante's inferno? Considering how much alchemy stuff and history the movie draws from I wouldn't be surprised.

It seemed so horrifically specific that I felt like I was missing a reference.

How many of the game mechanics are "real" within the lore?

Okay so, since we know that >!the player character respawning is a cannon power they have!<, I'm wondering what other gameplay mechanics are "real" in the world of the game.

Is this world literally made of blocks and voxels, is it literally flat? Do Seraphs have insane strength to carry huge stacks of wood?

I'm sure it's mostly just gameplay stuff but I figured I could ask.

I feel consistently burnt out from my job and my partner and feel horribly guilty about it

I'm almost 32, autistic (but very good at masking so people usually don't know unless I tell them) and recently landed my first full time job. I make what I think is a good salary, and I don't have to pay rent (living on my grandpa's land with his permission), so I feel like I should be doing well right now, but instead I just feel constantly tired and unmotivated to do anything else but work and veg out.

I'm providing for myself and my physically disabled partner who can't drive, and can't walk or stand for long periods without severe pain, and isn't strong enough to do simple tasks like cooking or moving heavy groceries. They are also very highly affectionate and want to constantly spend time with me cuddling or watching things together, when all I want to do is be left alone to recharge. I'm not mad at them for needing help or wanting affection, but I sometimes wish I didn't have to do all this, that i could just be alone and single, and I feel awful for thinking that. I can't tell if I'm being selfish or if I need to just suck it up and be better.

I used to be more available to them while I was unemployed, because I was able to get enough time to recharge so I spend some energy on them, but now it feels like I'm constantly at a deficit of recharge time and every minor inconvenience that comes with being someone's Significant Other feels like it's eating away at precious down time.

I'm watching my grandma's (not married to grandpa, different side of family) house while she's out of town, watering her plants, feeding her cats, etc. Being out of our tiny mobile home and being by myself all day feels really really nice, and I feel horrible for thinking that. I find myself wishing that my partner would find someone else to be happy with, someone who was more on their wavelength wrt affection, someone who could better handle full time work and full time caregiving. But I don't know if that person exists. Maybe this is just normal for neuro divergent people in relationships, I don't know.

I don't want to talk to my grandparents or parents about this, because they're biased towards me and my well being and I'm worried they won't give my partner the benefit of the doubt. I am hesitant to bring these feelings up to my partner because I'm a perpetual appeaser and they're sensative to feeling like a burden due to their disability. So some outside perspectives would really be appreciated.

Story about Surgeon husband who wants to kick out his FIL for being there for his kids?

I think it was an AITA style post, where the OP is a surgeon and claims to want his FIL to move out for good unselfish reasons, but then his wife finds the post and fuckin eviscerates him by telling how he only wants the FIL gone cause his daughters like him more than OP, and how she knows he's cheating and is going to file for divorce and basically everyone was better off when OP fucked off with his mistress.

Can you make a fortune teller/cootie catcher with only three "points"?

I think the way it folds is neat and was curious if you can make versions with different numbers of folds

What is going on with this deer's cheeks?

Location: Northern California, USA

I took a picture of this deer then noticed it's weird cheeks when I zoomed into the pic.

I thought it might be a tooth/jaw infection, or impacted food, but the fact that these lumps look symmetrical makes me wonder if there's something else going on?

I think it's a mule deer? But I could be wrong.

Do you need hearing protection if you're deaf?

Most of the warnings I, a hearing person, encounter wrt the dangers of loud sounds has to do with hearing loss. So I'm wondering if you don't have any hearing to lose, do you still need to do things like wear earplugs or headphones around loud machines?

Found these grubs while digging a post hole

(Sierra Nevada area, California, USA)

Found these in the dirt near a pine tree, I think a ponderosa but not 100% sure.

Unfortunately I think my post hole digger hit four of them, cause after a minute only one was moving :(

(I really buried them in a shallow hole after I took photos, so they can dig back to where they need to be)

I have a shed that I use as a home office, it was already here when I moved into the property, and since it's getting hotter my mom suggested I add some insulation panels to try and mitigate the heat.

I'd like to know if I could safely put wallpaper on these so I don't have to stare at all these R-Tech logos while I'm at the computer.
