My mom says it’s a barred owl named Bernard. Seen him a couple times but not for long.
Slowed down in the street for two birds in the street, and he was in the lawn and flew up to a tree. Scared the shit outta me. No one was behind me so I stopped and took his picture
Around 9pm we heard some hooting outside, we went out and saw these two sitting, perched on a tree outside the house. One is easily identifiable as an owl (on the right), I’m thinking maybe a barn? The one on the left we still can’t make out and just wanted to see if anyone had an idea. Do owls of different breeds post up next to each other like this? Could it be a different bird? I know the photo is blurry was just curious, thanks in advance!
I’m in Albuquerque, NM and saw this angry cutie while walking my dogs!
He was just chillin when I went out to my back yard.
Las Cruces, NM. In the middle of the day, surprisingly.
Just in case anyone wanted an update on the owl I posted about yesterday: News of the juvenile owl traveled quickly through the neighborhood block. A few houses down, one of the neighbors informed us that this lil guy had been a resident of their tree, it has quite strong branch coverage and is a perfect, twisty spot for an owl.
As for ID, I'm leaning towards Western Screech, but could be Eastern a bit out of the usual territory. Who knows, just glad he's learning to fly, and hope we don't have to rescue him from the pool cover again !

Thanks everyone!
Saw a great grey land on a branch nearby. Maybe 30ft away. Robins flying around announcing it and it stayed focused on the ground, like it was listening for something.
My curiosity got the better of me and I approached to get a clearer view, closest at maybe 15ft. He seemed fine, didnt fly away, and either focused on the ground or sometimes looked up at me and sometimes around. Over 5 mins there. Body posture was kind of like a cat sitting round, not standing up much.
I didn't want to get any closer, but since more of us were around, some others joined me, the bird stayed around for almost another 5 mins before flying to another tree. We were around 15, 20, and 30ft away.
I'm concerned, did we stress out the bird too much? Got some nice views and memories in the excitement of the moment but worried I let that get the better of me in terms of keeping a safe distance.
Would this bird be fine?
My dad found this lil guy on our pool cover this morning, wanting help identifying owl out of curiosity, and also next steps-- figure we should attempt to at least move him to solid ground, but not certain. Any advice appreciated!
Location: Western Colorado
Love these little guys! I thoroughly enjoyed shooting them and will do again soon!
