Rogue - Optional Features

https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/A08C6J-vfuDe

Did the recent UA Rogue disappoint? Well, I think it was superbly weak, but not surprisingly so – WOTC has a history of leaving the Rogue thoroughly behind the curve when it comes to combat. But it's certainly interesting and has potential. It should be a proper Rogue pet-subclass! Anyways.

You know what else has potential? My homebrewed, optional features for the Rogue class and all its other, current subclasses, which fit neatly onto a less than a single page.

I've tried to boost the Rogue a little through a few dastardly options that you can add piece-meal or altogether: Additional Cunning Actions, subclass-specific Cunning Strikes, a mechanic for discounts on chosen Cunning Strikes (called Cunning Reserves) and the weirdest one of all, the late Tier 2 feature, Tempt Fate, which may aid you in your attacks or may aid your face in getting smashed to bits.

You could do more, of course – but I mostly like the Rogue and wanted to mostly enhance what's already there.

Hope you enjoy it!

The Rogue wasn't cunning enough - optional features for Rogues

Go for Rogue!

I've recently been on a kick of designing optional class and general features to bring martial characters to the fore; and with the design restraint that I'd rather build upon existing features than invent new one wholesale. First, I came for your Hunter's Mark – and now, I've come for the Rogue.

Ever a bit lackluster in combat, I've tried to boost the Rogue a little through a slew of dastardly options: Additional Cunning Actions, subclass-specific Cunning Strikes, discounts on chosen Cunning Strikes (called Cunning Reserves) and the weirdest one of all, Tempt Fate, which may aid you in your attacks or may aid your face getting smashed to bits.

It's still a work in progress, so I welcome your feedback – but I hope you otherwise find it fun, because I certainly do!

Making Hunter's Mark matter - new level 6 feature for Rangers

Oh hi, Hunter's Mark!

As much as recent design have WOTC stray away from having Rangers rely on Hunter's Mark too-too much, clearly, the overall class still assumes you cast that most accursed of spells. I like it when classes and subclasses get to do something no one else can quite replicate – HM, as is, doesn't quite scratch that itch, nor do its other features inspire me all that much.

Paladins get their auras at 6th level - something unique to them - so as their more druidic counterparts, I thought Rangers should too (and Roving doesn't cut it). Thus, as is similar to others' attempts at 'fixing' HM, I've made Ranger's unique thing the ability to master the spell, slashing the action economy cost and letting them modify it in ways that fit their situation, like a true hunter.

Additionally, I thought it apt that the 'Hunter's Mark die' should scale a bit more than their very boring capstone (made relatively worse with this change).

My design goal was adding as few wholly new features as possible, while making the class stronger and more engaging.

I'd love some feedback – it's not quite done yet, but some testing has revealed its fun potential.
I'd be happy to spend time formatting it properly if anyone finds it appealing!

Level 6: Quarry's Bane

Your Hunter's Mark improves.

Casting time. At 6th level, you can cast Hunter’s Mark, or move your mark per the rules of the spell, as part of the Attack action when you hit a creature with an attack, instead of taking a Bonus Action.

Enhancements. Whenever you cast the spell, or move your mark per the rules of the spell, you can apply one enhancement which adds additional effects to the spell for the spell’s duration or until you move your mark.

At 11th level, you apply up to 2 enhancements.

Preparing Enhancements. You do not have access to all your enhancements at once. Instead, you prepare them similarly to how you prepare spells. The number of enhancements you prepare equals your Favored Enemy uses, as shown in the Ranger Features table (3 when you gain this feature). When you finish a Short or Long Rest, you can change your list of prepared enhancements.

Hunter’s Mark die. Your Hunter’s Mark die is the damage die of your Hunter's Mark. The size of the die changes based on enhancement choice and your Ranger level. Enhancements also use the die in other ways.

Enhancements:

Banal Quarry

Your quarry is beneath you. This casting of Hunter's Mark doesn't require Concentration, but the Hunter’s Mark die is lowered by one die size.

Bloody Quarry

Your quarry bleeds. When you attack a Bloodied quarry, you have Advantage on the attack. If you already have Advantage, you add your Hunter’s Mark die to the attack roll.

Distracted Quarry

Your quarry is overwhelmed. Your quarry has Disadvantage on Opportunity Attacks. Additionally, you have Advantage on Opportunity Attacks against your quarry. If you already have Advantage, you add your Hunter’s Mark die to your attack roll.

Doomed Quarry

Your quarry isn’t long for this world. When your quarry is Bloodied and you roll your Hunter’s Mark die, treat any result of 5 or lower as a 6.

Doubled Quarry

Your quarry is legion. When you mark a creature as your quarry, you can also mark another creature that you can see within 90 feet of you. You can have no more than 2 quarries at a time.

Exposed Quarry

Your quarry is outmaneuvered. When an ally makes an attack against your quarry, you can take a Reaction to add your Hunter's Mark die to both the attack and damage roll (if the attack hits).

Favorite Quarry

Your quarry satisfies you. Once per turn, when you deal damage to your quarry, you gain Temporary Hit Points equal to the number you rolled on your Hunter's Mark die.

Studied Quarry

Your quarry is easily solved. When your quarry forces you to make a saving throw, you add your Hunter’s Mark die to the result.

Trembling Quarry

Your quarry quivers before you. When your quarry makes an attack roll, and you can see your quarry, you can take a Reaction to subtract your Hunter's Mark die from the attack roll. If the attack misses, your quarry then takes Force damage equal to your roll.

Weakened Quarry

Your quarry is defenseless. When your quarry makes a Strength, Dexterity or Constitution saving throw, but before you know whether it succeeds or fails, you can take a Reaction to subtract your Hunter's Mark die from your quarry's roll.

---

Level 11: Foe Fighter

The damage die of your Hunter's Mark is a d8 instead of a d6.

Rethinking Feral Instincts and Relentless Rage - Barbarian Homebrew

Just like what seems like literally everyone else, I've been looking at ways to improve certain martial classes. I love features that either excite me, provide additional, interesting choices in encounters... or, even, both!

Furthermore, I'm not a fan of introducing too many new things – I mostly like the core classes as they are, though I think they often lack things that really excite me. I'd rather focus on small-to-medium additions, that either supplement existing features, modify them, or let the class do things that no one else can.

I'll be posting more of my homebrew, and I'd love some feedback as I plan to use these in my campaigns going forward.

Anyways... here's my ideas for improving the Barbarian!

Improved Danger Sense (level 7)

Replaces Feral Instincts.

Your Danger Sense improves.

Dexterity Proficiency. You gain proficiency in Dexterity saving throws. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency in another saving throw.

Strength as Initiative. If your total for an Initiative roll is less than your Strength score, you can use that score in place of the total.

Relentless Endurance (level 11)

Supplements Relentless Rage.

Your Relentless Rage lets you claw out your weaknesses. While your Rage is active, and you make a saving throw that doesn’t target Strength, you can add +5 to your Relentless Rage DC, take 5 Psychic damage, and make the saving throw as if it targeted Strength instead.
