Finally got my 2024 detailed!

I've been meaning to do this since the spring of 2025 but got wrapped up in so much last summer was never able to get it done. Finally got a full interior and exterior detail. Then immediately installed a screen protector on the infotainment system before the dust came back. I used Gloss Works in Worcester MA for anyone local. The owner was super friendly, and worked his ass off. Showed up at 9 am, did my wife's car, my RL, and cleaned the engine bay on my other car. Would definitely recommend.

Here it is looking shiny and clean.

RIP Green Nalgene. Your time has been cut short, but you lived well.

We are gathered here today to honor a true legend, a steadfast companion, and an absolute tank of a hydration vessel: Green Nalgene -better known as “Green Gene” to friends and family.

Born from high-density plastic and unyielding determination, Green Gene was far more than a water bottle. It endured accidental drops that would have shattered lesser vessels, was shoved into tight backpack pockets, sat faithfully through endless workdays, and survived the terrifying depths of the backseat of the car. On at least one occasion, it was even forcibly drained into a trash can by a TSA agent. An awkward moment, for sure, but Green Gene always stayed classy.

It bore its battle scars with pride. Scratches, scuffs, and graduation lines so long worn off that you just had to gauge its volume by character alone. It never asked for much: just a cold refill, a tight twist of its loop cap, and a spot on the journey.

Which makes its sudden departure all the harder to swallow. Its end came as it lived: dramatically, unyieldingly, and completely full. Dropped onto cold, unforgiving concrete, Green Gene made the ultimate sacrifice, meeting a hydrostatic pressure wave it simply could not overcome. The floor did not yield. Green Gene's soul, and also 32 ounces of water, were liberated all at once.

Green Nalgene is survived by its older siblings, BPA Blue Nalgene and Rhymes-With-Orange Nalgene.

Funeral services will be held Friday at dawn by the recycling bin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you write a short poem remembering Green Gene and the many adventures shared. Whether scaling mountain trails, braving airport security, or just rolling around under the passenger seat.

Rest in peace, Green Gene. You died as you lived: rough, tumble, and full of water. May your water never taste "pondy" and your cap stay tethered forever in the great beyond.

As a parent, you don't expect to say goodbye to your Nalgene before your own time ya know? I just didn't think it was possible .... You hear stories but you think "Not me. Not my Nalgenes. They're gonna live forever". Then one day... they are ripped from your life.

Ride around a friend's garden railroad

A quick ride around my friend's layout. Shot with a GoPro in a drop-end gondola. His layout is truly amazing, and he did all the stonework himself. Hope you all enjoy.

Think I fried the main battery relay. Trying to wire in a cooling fan.

Think I might have fried the main battery relay in my mini-ex. My YEF14 uses this SORL relay to provide power to the whole system. The SORL relay is on the negative side of the battery circuitry. It's basically a battery switch. Normally when I turn the key, it makes a loud click, and then I have power for my volt meter, hour meter, lights, and startup.

I tried to add in an automotive 30A relay to power a ventilation fan for the engine bay. This 2nd relay is supposed to be triggered by the SORL. In theory I turn the key, the SORL energizes the system, which provides power for the trigger circuit on 2nd 30A relay, which then closes the circuit and the fan turns on. The trigger circuit for the 2nd relay is powered of one of the 12v lines going to the volt meter display via a splitter/harness.

The issue is I tried to do a test run, with the just the trigger circuit to the 2nd relay set up. At first I had the leads reversed for the trigger circuit. The cheap harness I bought that was wired backwards. This blew a fuse which I quickly replaced. I fixed the reversed leads and tried again. I heard the SORL click, then in it clicked again and the volt meter and hour meter went dark. This time the fuse did not blow.

Now when I turn the key I get nothing or the SORL just clicks randomly. I did get the volt/meters flicker back on, but only for a second.

This SOLR is rated for 200A so I am not sure what I could have done to it. The fuse protecting the circuit is 15A. I connected the both the +/- leads to the tiger circuit to the +/- on the volt meter.

Does it matter that there was no load across the 30A circuit on the 2nd relay? Wiring instructions attached. I am at a loss.

Did I miss my chance to order the Brick Railroad Locomotive?

I had found the ordering page, but now I can't. I am assuming that means ordering is closed? I've never ordered one of the Bricklink sets before. Do they ever produce extras?

Edit: Damnit!

Ridgeline hauled our new mini excavator!

Well we made it home with our mini ex and a few attachments in the bed. Big thanks to folks here for their input on my previous post. This was my first time towing anything serious. The trailer wound up being about 400-450 lb lighter than expected which helped. You could feel the weight and we kept it slow (plus there was traffic), but the RL handled it well. No issues and handling/breaking was in control. Managed 21-22 mpg too which was better than expected.

Towing a mini-Ex. Want to make sure I am doing this right.

So the end of this week my wife and I are headed about 45-80 miles away to pick up a mini-ex we purchased and bring it home. This is only me second time towing, and last time I did it I rented a truck/trailer from uhaul - that is to say, they did all the math.

Anyhow the mini-Ex is ~ 2800 lb. The trailer we are renting is ~1950lb , meaning all together I'll be towing ~4800 lb. As I understand it, the total cargo capacity for the truck of 1509lb, is the sum of all passengers + bed cargo + tongue weight, and the tongue weight limit is 600 lb.

So if I do 1509-365(passengers) -600 = 544 lb of capacity remaining in the bed. Is there anything else to it? The reason I ask is we might want to pick up some attachments while we are there to go with it, but they could weigh another 100-600 lb, depending on what we get. I want to stay within the limits of the vehicle for safety, and I don't want to damage anything.

Any input would be appreciated.
