Jazz and Music scene

My son will be at UofO this fall and I'm wondering about any jazz jam sessions or other community opportunities for folks like him. He's a remarkably talented guitarist and singer. He's not a music major but it is his passion.

Also, are there any jazz venues we could drop in at? We'll be up for Inducktion for a couple days and I'd like to get him excited about college rather than looking at it as an obligation.

Copy files into the appropriate folders

I have 71 directories named after a location in the US in the format "CITY_STATE" (ie "ALBANY_NY").

In each of these directories I have sub-directories reading 1mile, 3mile, 10mile, 30mile.

I need to sort through 284 image files named "CITY_STATE_image_SIZE.tif" (ie "ALBANY_NY_image_1m.tif") and copy them into the appropriate folder.

max and min elevation from GeoTiff

I have 71 Dem GeoTiffs. In Qgis the layer gives me the minimum and maximum elevation, but I want to pull this data from all 71 files rather than do it manually. Seems like there is a simple scripting solution.

Thank you for any help.

Counter theory to the SaaSpocolpyse

The narrative has been that SaaS stocks are undervalued because of AI fears, but a more reasonable explanation is that the momentum is just elsewhere right now. The returns are just so impressive in AI related companies that the market can't resist.

This a relevant distinction because it means that if the shine comes off the AI sector the fallback will be SaaS and we'll see a jump in value.

Why are all data centers treated the same?

All the capex being built out in data centers is being lumped under cloud computing for their respective companies. However, these data centers are being populated with GPUs which are only good for parallel computing and vector math, not spinning up virtual systems, storage, etc.

Seems like data centers whose only use is AI inference and training need to be considered as a separate category. If there is a burst in an AI bubble and enterprise customers pull back from paying for tokens that entire ecosystem dies, or seriously retreats, but other proven cloud services will remain.

What am I missing here?

SpaceX crash

Now that Elon has suckered losers into funding the exit liquidity, how far does this dog turd sink? What is the real value of a satellite internet provider with a puny TAM and a rocket company hemorrhaging cash to an unending R&D cycle? And does that data center ever turn a profit over the cost of building it?

Who actually buys SpaceX?

I know that index funds weighted to the Nasdaq are required to buy, but who else could possibly be buying this turd of their own volition? Is it really just retail investors with too much testosterone and not enough brain cells?

The other candidate I can think of is mutual funds focused on tech and AI. Like, the managers know its a bad idea, but they have to invest in it or else here from investors when the stock pops. Similar to the adage "no one ever got fired losing money on IBM."

sales tax on inherited car from Oregon in California?

I inherited my mother's 2014 car. When registering a car from out of state California wants you to pay sales tax. Does this apply if the person is deceased?

She purchased the car approximately 5 years ago.

Blue List UAS for videography

Not necessarily mapping, but this sub seems to be a little more professional so I'm hoping you can help.

I have a non-negotiable need for a Blue List compliant drone to be used primarily for video and photographic purposes. The AltaX is ideal, but at over 30k is a hard sell right now.

Can anyone advise on my best option that is cheaper? We previously had the Skydio 2+ but it's off the list, and the camera was unimpressive to say the least. Seems like most options prioritize things we don't need, ie. infrared, lidar, etc.

Thank you.

S&P Index for kids in a Roth?

I've decided to set up a long-term investment for my kids (just leaving the house). I was going to start with 5k in a Roth S&P index. The idea is to let compounding do its thing so they can have retirement funds when they are old and live in Alpha Centauri (or whatever the world will be like).

So, is there a better option to maximize you kids retirement account?

Edit: They are both in college, so I don't want this showing up as something that can affect any aid they might be offered.

ADBE, MSFT, IBM, NOW, CRM all climb rapidly in one day

Adobe, Snowflake, IBM, Microsoft, and ServiceNow are all up at least 6% (CRM) to 7.3% (ADBE) all in one day. Why? These are dramatic jumps and all on one day with now clear reason. Thoughts/speculation?

Edit: Got ADBE increase wrong.
