New Storm coming in from the West

NWS says Severe Thunderstorm warning until 5:30. Through my window, I can see it coming

Edit: Had to correct my own grammar, lest the storm come through my window.

{US}"Mom" wants college son's packages delivered to stranger

I live in a college town. This post showed up on a local Facebook group. I responded that it sounds like a scam, OP claims not. I still think so. Help?

"Maybe this sounds crazy, I dunno? Just wracking my brain of possibilities….

We are flying into (college town) from ID this Tuesday (18th) morning for my son to attend local college. Plan is to be in town late afternoon/early evening till Saturday night. Long story short there are some things I’d really like my son to have in his dorm like a specific desk fan, a small shelving unit over his mini fridge and a desk organizer thing. Maybe some odds and ends. Obviously I can’t fly with them and if I ship them it’ll take a while to get to the mail room, sorted etc & I’d love to have the dorm room complete or near there by when I leave.

If I purchased these items on Amazon is there anyone that would be willing to let me have them delivered to their home for me to pick up so they will be there in or at the time we will be getting there? We are staying at Days Inn, we have orientation Wed/Thurs & he moves into the (the dorm) Friday. This would be a huge weight off my shoulders and I would greatly appreciate it."

Brightspeed is killing trees

Just today I got no fewer than three "offer letters" from Brightspeed, and that takes it to nine just this past week. Two are addressed to me, one to "occupant". They just keep coming. Is Brightspeed really that desperate for customers? Do they have an employee who's trying to make everyone hate them? Between this and their strolling salesmen, it's just gotten really annoying.

Fresh cherries and thin pork chops

I just finished pitting my two pound impulse buy from Costco five days ago, and I now need to freeze or use them quickly.

I have thin cut pork chops as a protein, and (maybe) fresh cauliflower for a veggie, and some pantry and frozen things. Also full fat Greek yogurt, half and half, some pomegranate juice. This should be easy, but my brain is a mess today.

It's just me, but I freeze meals, so it needs to work for that.

Thanks!

Can this plant be saved?

I have my plants outside for the summer. Last night some critter ate my pothos down to the stems. There are some stems, but no leaves left. I'd really like to save this plant, since it's origin is a cutting from a dead friend, and I've had it for several years. (Same critter also ate the flower off my clivia. I hope it has an upset stomach.)

I've considered uprooting it and putting it in a glass container to see if that's enough for it to photosynthesize from, but I'm not sure that would work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The Lawn & The National Mall?

Has anyone else noticed that there is now a certain resemblance of the National Mall to the Lawn?

ELI5: What, exactly, is an itch?

It's not pain, exactly, but it's not the usual state for skin. How does it work in the body? I assume it's a signal that travels along nerves, but what differentiates it from other signals, such as pain signals?

Edit: I'm aware of why we itch (useful evolutionary tool) and even what can trigger an itch, but my curiosity is more what goes on in our body when an itch is triggered. What nerve pathways does itching use? How is it differentiated from pain, especially considering that excessive scratching can turn an itch into pain.

Also, itching can occur with no obvious cause.

Appliance shopping

Edit: Thanks, everyone for the recommendations!

Has anyone purchased from A2D appliances, basically across the street from Target? Good prices, service, delivery? Thanks.

[Landlord VA] Rodent issues

I own and live in half of a side-by-side duplex.

We recently had rodent problems, and I’ve had the entry points fixed in tenant unit.

However, a mouse/rat tried to build a nest under the electric stovetop, pulling out some insulation to do it.  We got to them before it was completed.

Now the tenants are asking for a new range.  I realize that I may have to do that, but am wondering about repair instead.  Chat GPT says it’s possible, but I don’t totally trust AI. I plan to call in a local repair person to check it out, but wondering if anyone else has had this kind of issue.

To complicate this, this past February I noticed some whole vegetables, ie, squash, sweet potatoes, etc, outside the tenants’ back stoop.  I asked the tenant if they were doing that,. And she said “only for things that can compost.”  Mind you, there’s no compost bin.  They were just throwing it out their back door.

I told her they needed to stop doing that and they should clean up what was already out there.  And I wrote a letter that I stupidly never gave to them.

I'm not totally blaming them for the issue, but they are not helping.

So, yes, I get that as landlord I’m responsible for taking care of the rodents, but feel that they should also bear some of that burden.  I’m not sure how, though.  Would appreciate suggestions/thoughts

I haven't raised their rent at all since they've moved in, so I will be doing that, but that's not going to do much.

The house was professionally cleaned before they moved in in October, 2024.

I have to add that this is two young women, and they are seriously messy.   When I and the handyman went in last year to check the a/c, there were ants on a dead popsicle stick under a pile of clothing (I had to move the clothing to get the work done)  There is also food on the sink and counters, and spilled cat food on the floor.

They pay their rent on time, and they’re quiet. I try not to judge messiness, but this is not good.

They’re month to month, and I have actually debated giving them notice, but, honestly, the whole idea of going through a rental process again exhausts me. I turn 77 next week and have been renting the place out for 35-some years.  I may be selling within the next five years, if not sooner.

The rental income is important to me, or I swear I’d just give them notice and not rent it again.
