Transitioning from US IM-trained Hospitalist to Canada : Experiences Preparing & Adjusting?

I’m hoping to relocate to Canada this fall to start a hospitalist position. I completed US IM residency but have had about a 10-month gap since graduation while handling job search, immigration, and licensing. I did not have any attending experience in the US prior to this.
I’m looking for insight from hospitalists (or other physicians) who have made the move from the US to Canada. Ideally IM or FM backgrounds, but I’d welcome experiences from other specialties too, as I’m sure there are many common structural and systemic adjustments.
If you’re willing to share, I’d love to hear:
• How you prepared for the transition (licensing, credentialing, differences in documentation, order entry, etc.)
• What adjustments were most challenging (or smoother than expected) once you started practicing
• Any advice on adapting to the Canadian healthcare system, team dynamics, or daily workflow
Thank you in advance for any guidance – really appreciate the insight

How did you prepare and adjust to the canadian medical system

Hello US (trained) docs of BC.
I am hopefully relocating to BC in the fall to start my hospitalist job. I am US trained in IM (graduated residency then had a 10month gap in practice while working on finding a job in canada +navigating immigration and licensing. I did not have any attending experience in the US. If you’d be willing to share your experience on how you prepared & adjusted to practicing in canada coming from the US, ideally IM/FM but would be happy to hear of other specialties as well since i m sure there will be structural and systemic overlap beyond specialty specific differences. Thanks a lot for your insight.

US board certified IMG physician unemployed

This is a cautionary tale for anyone considering the US path. I finished residency in the US, I am board certified in my specialty from the US, i am an IMG. I found myself pushed out of the US due to US policy around 100k fee h1b. I am unemployed in my home country where the job market for doctors is dead. My home country has refused to recognize my US medical credentials. I am not even from any of the banned countries. This is just to warn people about the risks that come with investing your youth, energy, money and time in this path, only to find yourself in square one, except you re in debt, old and full of regrets.

Edit: for people inquiring about my country, i am from a a middle eastern country that is NOT subject to any ban. What you are not clocking is that this 100k fee applies to anyone who would seek a work visa (h1b) and who happen to be outside of the US at the time of their filing. And it CAN happen when you apply to a j1 waiver, as a j1 waiver ultimately allows you to work in an underserved area WITH A WORK VISA. So if your j1 waiver is delayed beyond the end of your residency/ extention for board period, you have no choice but to leave the country unless you want to incure illegal presence. And once you leave the coubtry youvare subject to the fee novmatter your nationality.

Risk of misrepresentation declaring common-law now after saying “single” on previous visitor visa?

I’m hoping for some advice on a potential misrepresentation issue with IRCC.
When I applied for my visitor visa (TRV), I declared myself as single. At the time, I genuinely believed that was correct — I wasn’t married, and common-law relationships are not a legal concept in my home country. I thought you were either married or single.
I’m now preparing my Express Entry profile for permanent residence as a skilled worker. My lawyer has reviewed everything and confirmed that I meet the legal definition of common-law partnership with my current partner under Canadian immigration rules.
We are not yet married (and cannot marry quickly due to lengthy bureaucracy in my country). My plan is to apply for PR independently through Express Entry (not through spousal sponsorship) and, once I have PR, sponsor my partner to join me in Canada.
My question:
Is there a significant risk of misrepresentation if I now declare that I am in a common-law relationship in my EE profile and future applications? I had no idea what “common-law” meant when I filled out the visitor visa form.
Any experiences or insights from people who’ve been in similar situations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi everyone,

I am in the difficult situation where i signed a j1 waiver ob but had to leave the US before it was approved. My curr t employer told me they wouldnt pay the 100k fee, not would they want to explor rthe O1 option. Therefore i basically lost hat job. Is there any employer out there that depserately eed tpvhire a PCP/IM/hospitalist for next year and would br willing to pay the 100k fee for me? I have been jobless for 9 months and it s becoming very difficult - cant find a job in my country and my IM training is not recognized by my country

I am willing to go literally anywhere

Hello,

First this subreddit has been very helpful so far, i am hoping to find an answer to the following licensing question:

Does CPSBC accept standard letters of good conduct to fulfill their CPC (Certificates of Professional Conduct) from foreign jurisdictions (specifically non-anerican boards), in which the letter is quite brief and basically just says this physician has not been subject to any disciplianry sanctions by the board. Or do they mandate that the board specifically and explicitely state “no restriction, revocation, is in good standing” which my board simply wont do because they have their standard template for letter of good conduct. It is literally a one liner “ no disicplinary sanctions”

Thanks a lot!!!
