I built an extension that detects when you're stuck scrolling and snaps you out of it

I tried a bunch of extensions that hide YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok feeds, etc.

They helped a little, but I realized my actual problem wasn't Shorts or Reels.

I'd just end up scrolling the main feed instead.

So I built ScrollBlock.

Instead of only hiding content, it tries to catch you when you're stuck in a scrolling loop and shows a popup that forces you to make a conscious decision:

"Do I actually want to keep scrolling?"

It also includes:

  • Daily time limits for specific websites
  • 4-digit PIN locks for sites you want to avoid completely
  • Feed cleanup (Reels, Shorts, Explore pages, and other addictive feeds)

Works on:
Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, Reddit, Pinterest, Threads, and LinkedIn.

The goal isn't to block social media.

It's to stop opening Instagram for 5 minutes and realizing an hour disappeared.

Completely free.

Why I moved my social media from mobile apps to a PC browser.

Mobile apps are just too smooth. The frictionless ui is made to trick you into endless scrolling and willpower is honestly useless against it. i finally deleted the apps off my phone and shifted entirely to my pc browser. the experience there is naturally more clunky and intentional.

To make this setup actually productive, i use a browser tool that surgically modifies the ui of the sites i still need for work. instead of blocking the whole website, it just physically hides the addictive traps like the short video feeds and reels tabs.

i also have it set to lock my worst time-waster sites behind a 4-digit pin, enforce a hard 15-min daily limit, and give me a popup nudge if i start doom-scrolling too far down a page. this way is now helping me stay engaged with friends and keep up socially, but it really reduces my overall screen time. Turns out just hiding the addictive parts of the screen works way better than relying on discipline. has anyone else tried modifying their browser ui instead of using strict full-site blockers?

I finally deleted social media apps and moved everything to my PC. Here’s why.

I realized I couldn't "discipline" my way out of a feed designed by a billion-dollar company to keep me hooked.

The real trap is the mobile UI. Apps on our phones are so smooth and easy to navigate that you don't even recognize how much time you're spending. If you use Instagram on a mobile browser, it feels "static" and clunky—and that friction is actually a good thing.

I’ve completely shifted from mobile to PC for social media now. It’s been much better for my eyes, but more importantly, it's better for my focus. To stay productive, I found this tool that surgically modifies the UI of the sites I actually need for work.

How this tool helped me:

  • Hiding the feeds: Instead of blocking the whole site, it just hides Shorts and Reels. Out of sight, out of mind.
  • PIN locks: My worst sites now need a 4-digit PIN.
  • Hard limits: 15 minutes a day. When time is up, it’s blocked. No bargaining.
  • Scroll nudges: If I scroll too far down a page, a popup snaps me out of the trance.

Trust me, once you shift to the browser and use a proper blocker tool to clean up the UI, you will never go back to using social media on mobile. You finally feel like you're in control again.

Stuck scrolling for hours without productive social connection? I built a solution.

ScrollBlock is the answer. It is a free browser extension I created that gives you a popup nudge to snap you out of it if you scroll too much.

It can also hide Reels, Shorts, and Explore pages from your feeds so that you can only use social media for what it was originally made for (actual connection).

If you need stricter rules, you can also:

  • Block addictive social media sites on your browser completely behind a PIN.
  • Set a strict daily time limit on specific sites.

The goal is to help you control your own life, rather than letting those big tech giants control it.

It is completely free. Here are the direct download links for all major browsers:

Chrome (Arc, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera):

Edge:
