I’ve got it from here, ma’am.

My furrr-ocious guard canine snoozin’ on the chow delivery that I left on the couch. Thank you Gracie. I am resting easier knowing you’re keeping at least this part of our household safe!

Gracie eyeball update

Gracie is not 100% but I can see evidence of healing! Here are some pictures of the eye to compare, and her requesting a nose boop. She got that and a treat. 😊

Apparently having keratoconjunctivitis (chronic dry eye) makes ulcerated corneas fairly problematic and easy to get. As I got older, my eyes got dryer. Sometimes when I’d wake up in the morning and open my eyes too fast, my lid would scrape off a layer of cornea. That was a wake-upper… felt like a hot poker in my eye and I’d spend an hour with my eye squeezed shut rocking back and forth moaning. Painful as hell. I’m just so sad she’s going through this kind of pain, and yet NOT rocking back and forth and crying. Dogs are amazing beings. They teach me something every day about dealing with bumps in the road of life. Thanks for all your well-wishes! She has a vet appt tomorrow with her regular vet so we’ll see what he has to say about her progress!

On the mend…

Well, Senior Saturday night and Baby Kevin Sunday morning turned into quite the nail-biting and wailing and crying event. Me not her. Gracie developed a distressing cloudiness in her good eye that I noticed at 11 pm Saturday. Then that eye started to roll back in her socket and her eyes stayed half-closed. Then by morning, it was completely white and horrifying-looking so we visited the new emergency vet clinic in town.

She was very careful finding her way around before we went. Up and down stairs were traveled with caution. I stood by her while she peered downward and stepped carefully. She never stumbled or fell. But I was terrified she was going to be completely blind… her bad eye was dim to begin with, but if the good eye failed, her life would be very different. It happened so fast! She’s already deaf, and she understands my sign language… how awful for her to lose sight also!

At the emergency vet, they were wonderful and thorough. They took pressures and stained the bad eye to see what was going on. Turns out, she had a scratched cornea, which also horrified me because I know how incredibly painful that is. She got some carprofen and a neomycin/bactracin salve. And Gracie was Gracie, wagging constantly, and utilizing her sniffer and willingly going wherever they took her! Her usual sweet self. The vet said that her body was working on healing and she would recover. Whew. 😥 They asked if she had a feline sibling to explain the scratch, and she doesn’t. Just the minipoo. I think I might have done it applying salve? Or maybe she walked into one of the thickets in the back yard and got whipped by a sharp leaf or something?

Ah, alas, I’m too old for this drama. Poor baby. Send her good thoughts and also, congratulate her for maintaining her 5 lb weight loss! The last photo is what her beautiful eyes were like just 2 days ago. I hope they are healed quickly! ❤️ Thanks for listening to me vent!

Pawsitively Puppy-like…

…with her fresh puppy cut. Gracie wanted to stop by to say hi. She posed pretty and then asked to be shared here so she could say hi and likely get you to try to convince me she needs more treats. You can try, but I’m a tough cookie to convince unless the treats are diabetic-friendly!… I’m pretty sure, though, that there’s rotisserie in her immediate future.

Rocky Kanaka and CKCS…

I’m sure you’ve heard, but 30+ Cavs were rescued in CA from the back of a U-Haul. Rocky Kanaka (Sitting with Dogs on YouTube) is sitting with them. Have Kleenex ready. 😢 I’m ready to fly to California…

ETA: this is a fund raiser video for them; at least one has to have a hernia fixed.

Vintage yarn

Hi! I don’t post here, I just come to admire all your beautiful work and feel guilty get inspired. 😂

This past weekend, we were cleaning out the garage and I came across an old broken-down cedar chest of my mom’s. I opened it and found 18 balls of this beautiful wool! Looks to be fingering weight, and really really old. Looked up the company and when it was around, and gathered wisdom suggests the time frame reaches from the 1930s through the 1950s. It’s still good, strong, no evidence of pest problems thanks to the trusty cedar chest.

Are there any vintage fiber aficionados or fiber historians here that can shed any light on its value, the company, or anything else that’s interesting? Or point me to another sub or resource? I did find references to the Hammond Times archive with ads for the yarn that would give me some idea of how much mom paid for it and who sold it besides “large department stores.” But it’s behind a pay wall. So thought I’d check here because Reddit knows all. 😊

Before and after

Or, with and without.

Just thought I’d share. I felt like I needed a break from Zep; I was not eating enough at all, and was miserable from that. I wasn’t hungry and in fact had extreme food aversion. I was on it for IWL for my general health (I have heart failure and kidney disease, both well-managed) but WL helps. The weight loss stopped, even with a dose increase. I was ok with the plateau. I wanted nutrition.

So, we’re on a break.

Today it hit me. I’m miserable. Compared to life on Zep, life off of it has become a constant preoccupation with eating stuff. I ate a good dinner tonight, reasonable amounts, well balanced. 30 minutes later, I wanted to eat again. I wasn’t hungry but it wouldn’t leave my head. I was watching some TV and missed a lot of the basketball game because I kept thinking about what there was to eat. Wow, I thought. There’s that food noise. By bucketfuls.

Now I’m asking myself if I was this obsessed before a year on Zep, or was the noise just so normal that I didn’t notice, or has being on Zep made it worse? Whatever the case, I can’t live like that anymore so I’m starting again.

Now I’m worried about going through the side effects again. I stayed on low dosages because of the food aversion, and a step up caused more 🤮 and that thing on the other end. I’m most worried about not being able to eat enough. I’m eating enough now, maybe too much (a small amount of weight has returned) but I feel physically fantastic, I have energy, my strength is improving, as is my stamina. A starved body loses all that. I hate the noise, I hate the weight returning, and I love feeling better physically again because I can eat. But…being on it again means food aversion and lack of a balanced diet. Frustrating as heck.

I’m going back again, restarting at 2.5 (been off of it for 6 weeks) and I’ll see if it’s still a problem and if it is, I’ll try to make a plan to eat something small every few hours, no matter how much I don’t want it.

So have any of you taken a break? The biggest takeaway for me was the misery of my head telling me to eat all the time. What experiences have you had? I wish I could titrate my increases differently but I am using Lilly Direct. 🤷‍♀️ I’ll just go for it and hope for the best.

My rambling sharing has ended… have a wonderful day/night! 😊

Happy 13th!!!!

I was significantly more enthusiastic about it than she was.

Later, she’ll get her diabetic-friendly birthday cake made of almond flour, Greek yogurt, a touch of honey, and cream cheese and Greek yogurt frosting as part of her celebration dinner.

That’s when she’ll care…🙄😂

She came to live with me when she was 11.5 years old. Her transformation was slow, but she’s used to us now, wags her tail all the time, demands loves and rubs and boosts onto the sofa next to me. She has slimmed down, gotten treated for her illnesses, finally, and regularly romps and dances when she’s excited, which is a lot of the time (when she’s awake).

Here’s to a wonderfully happy first year as a real teenager! I love you Gracie! 🥰

I’m a sucker for those clickbait helpful “news” articles about dog breeds and I always read them.

This one, wow. It’s the kindest and most generous treatment of Cavalier brain cell deficits I have ever seen. 😂
