Preserving the history of the late '90s Earth First! movement.

Hey r/humboldt!
I'm pushing through the middle stretch of a 60-day campaign to fund the publication of my book, Bees and Butterflies.

Volume 1 concludes with the end of the Luna tree-sit, capturing a deeply personal look at the environmental activism in our county during that era. Crowdfunding is entirely word-of-mouth, and getting the support of the local community to hit the goal means the world to me.

I can't post the link directly in this thread, but if you'd like to help bring this story to bookshelves, the link to the Kickstarter is in my bio, or you can shoot me a DM and I'll send it to you directly!

"Bees and Butterflies" Kickstarter Campaign, endorsed by Julia "Butterfly" Hill

Check out this wonderful endorsement post by Julia "Butterfly" Hill for the "Bees and Butterflies" Kickstarter campaign...

Jason Wilson and i have been friends since i was 18 years old. He eventually ended up in California and was part of my main ground support team along with being involved in the larger forest defense movement. i told him a while back that he should write his life story because it is a fascinating life and he is a really good writer.

He did it. Now i am helping him fundraise so he can get his book professionally finished and ready for distribution.

He is doing a Kickstarter campaign. Please check it out and consider helping support the finishing of his book.

For the highest level of support, i will be joining Jason for a ZOOM call to share stories and memories and answer questions from everyone who gives at that level. 🙏🙏🙏💚🦋🌙🌲

A piece of local history: I ran ground support for Julia Butterfly Hill during the Luna tree-sit, and I just finished writing down the story.

With so much always changing around the county, I've been doing a lot of reflecting on our local history lately—specifically the Redwood Timber Wars back in the late 90s.

I was deeply involved with Earth First! back then and actually served on the ground support team for Julia Butterfly Hill during her tree-sit in Luna. Organizing that ground support—hiking in supplies, dodging logging security, and keeping the lifeline intact—was a massive, gritty effort right here in our own backyard.

I’ve spent the last few years making sure this era of local activism isn't forgotten. I recently finished writing a two-part memoir documenting my life, with a huge chunk of it dedicated to those exact days in the redwoods. Part I, Bees and Butterflies, is officially done.

If anyone is interested in local grassroots history or wants to read more about the project, I put some info in my Reddit profile bio.

I'm up in McKinleyville these days, but I'll be hanging out in the comments today—would love to answer any questions about the tree-sits, or just hear your own memories from that era of the county!

Coming out of the Days Between, and finally getting my stories down on paper.

Hey everyone,

Now that we are stepping out of the Days Between, I'm still sitting here reflecting on the miles, the music, and the community that shaped so much of who we are.

Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time looking backward. I recently finished writing a two-part autobiography that covers my life, including a lot of the wild counterculture history and on-the-ground activism from decades past. So much of the soundtrack to those pivotal years was provided by the Dead, and the ethos of our community runs right through the center of the book.

I’m currently running a 60-day campaign to get Part I of this project, Bees and Butterflies, independently published. Because a lot of subreddits' automated filters frequently pull down posts with direct links, you can find the project link right in my Reddit profile bio if you want to check it out and support a fellow Deadhead trying to preserve these grassroots stories before they fade!

Would love to hear what shows you all put on to get through the last week. NFA. ✌️

Frustrated

I'm really frustrated with the Zara interviews. I've applied for several projects now and Zara seems to find a problem with every single interview. I've worked as an AI trainer for the past 2.5 years, have been on dozens of projects, work on multiple platforms, and know what I'm doing.

I feel like Zara cannot be pleased. No matter what I say, no matter how well I try to answer its questions, I consistently fail these interviews. Can I please speak with a human?

We train AI models because they make mistakes. That's the only reason we have work in the first place. It's incredibly frustrating when I know I have the skills to do well on the projects but keep getting told that I didn't meet some kind of quality standard by an AI model that seems to be way too nit-picky.

Then I come on here and see someone who got hired for a project I just applied for without even doing the AI interview at all.

Something isn't right when someone with over 2 years of full-time AI training experience keeps getting told that they don't meet the certification standards. Zara can keep weeding me out, but Micro1 is missing out on someone who is a very hard, dedicated worker, capable of adapting to whatever the client needs on a project. Asking me what I would do in a given situation highly depends on what the client wants/needs, and I feel penalized for answering Zara's questions that way.
