Sunrise on the Atlantic - Newfoundland East Cast Trail

Since so many of you guys enjoyed my morning coffee photo I posted yesterday, I wanted to add this picture as well. I camped out on a section of the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland called Deadman’s Path.

This headland that the sun was cresting over is the last large headland before hitting Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America (unless you’re one of those people who count Greenland) Here on the east coast of NL we don’t have many big mountains, but we are the first to see the sunrise, and I should appreciate that more than I usually do.

Nice views to wake up to on the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland

The past few weeks I’ve been having a lot of issues with anxiety and just generally feeling like I’m “not able to handle it.” One thing that I know that helps me with that is solo backpacking because it reminds me that I am capable, I am self reliant, and I can handle it. So I took a little trip on a whim and I’m glad I did.

Is Welding a good trade to get into these days?

I need to go back to school because at this point, I don’t think I could hate any job more than the one I have now (Child and Youth Care, iykyk). Leaning towards doing a trade because I’ve discovered that there are much worse fares than working with your hands and going home tired at the end of the day.

Anyone out there able to give me any ideas on what it is like as an apprentice welder here in the province right now? I’ve heard of apprentices getting fly in/fly out jobs right out of school but I’m not sure if that’s some people getting lucky or not.

Recently got into hiking again this spring after losing a lot of weight, I haven’t been able to get out like I used to and wanted to start again. I’ve been doing some small day hikes with my 30lb backpack to try and train before I feel ready to try a full overnight trip.

A week ago I hiked 7K in my North Face hiking boots and got identical blisters on the pads of my feet. No big deal, I figured it was my thin socks and the fact that I didn’t have them laced tight enough, so I invested in some full cushion Smart Wool socks and said I’d tie them tighter next time. I also recognize that blisters are to be expected even for people who weigh less than me.

Today I did the same hike with all of these changes and I’m getting blisters in the same spot again and none of the changes seemed to make any difference. The hike has a lot of elevation change and I’m starting to think my boots may be too big as I can feel my foot rubbing forward and backward on the sole of the boot as I’m hiking up or downhill. I’m willing to invest in a pair of trail runners to replace the boots but is it possible that I just need to get some new insoles? Looking for advice on what you would do
