Free Light Bulbs

Free Light Bulbs

Ive got a bag of light bulbs that will be going to the recycling center. Mostly CFLs, including some CFL spotlights, incandescent bulbs, including a couple three way bulbs.

Willing to meet somewhere in Qualicum or Parksville or somewhere in between to give them to you.

I hate to have them go in the trash, so if you want them, add a reply here and let me know.

I will hang on to them until end of day Friday

What to do about Termites?

Hi!

Can someone tell me what to do about termites in Parksville? I’m told tenting the house is not a thing there. How does one eradicate the termites?

Thanks.

SS Texaco Oklahoma

Dad took this photo in Curacao in the mid to late 1960s. Likely 1965 or 1966. When I went to look up info on the ship, this is what I learned:

The SS Texaco Oklahoma was a 632-foot American oil tanker that broke in two and sank in a severe storm on March 27, 1971, approximately 120 miles northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The disaster claimed the lives of 31 of her 44 crew members.

  • The Sinking: Bound from Port Arthur, Texas, to Boston with 33,000 tons of crude oil, the ship broke in two around 3:30 AM. The forward section buckled backward, destroying a lifeboat and killing 13 crew members who were asleep there.
  • The Rescue: The remaining 31 crewmen in the stern section were left stranded as the vessel stayed afloat for roughly 27 hours. Despite firing flares and attempting to signal passing ships, they were largely unnoticed until the stern finally sank, leaving only 13 survivors who were eventually rescued by the Liberian freighter Sasstown.
  • Cause: Investigations by the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) identified severe winter storm conditions compounded by stresses on the hull structure as the primary causes of the failure.

Legacy & Memorials

  • Port Arthur Connection: A significant number of the crew who perished were from Port Arthur, Texas. The city maintains a deep historical connection to the disaster, often honoring the lost seamen.
  • Museum of the Gulf Coast: The Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur preserves the history of the tanker, including displays, historical documents, and a specially commissioned scale replica of the vessel.

Heritage Area Winter 1974

Looking West on College Ave with Little Flower Church on the right. House on Edgar Street.

Edit: it looks like light posts may have been moved from one side of the street to the other. Currently, lights are on the South side of the street. In this pic, posts are on the same side as the church.

Edit2: this is likely Edgar Street looking North, not College
