How can I best encourage reading?

As I am sure many of you deal with, I am having trouble motivating my students to actually read the textbook/assigned material. I am especially struggling with getting them to read scientific articles. They mostly just ignore them and then perform terribly on questions derived from the readings.

What methods have you found success with? I have required summaries, outlines, etc in the past but have had mixed results. How can I best encourage them to engage with scientific literature?

What were the best labs during your education?

I am a ecology educator looking to overhaul my environmental/ecology/conservation lab for this fall! What were the best labs that you conducted during your education? Fill me in with your fun ideas!

Additionally, what field skills/techniques would you have wanted to learn more about/what was most useful for your career?

Crawfish sightings?

I'm a teacher in the area and am looking to connect my students with the outdoors. I am interested in creating a crawfish project am am curious about areas that people have observed crawfish near Bismarck. Not looking for anyone's secret fishing spot and we would be doing catch and release.

Any other biological/ecological phenomena are of interest as well, let me know if you all have ideas on where we might observe interesting plants/animals/etc.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Making presentations with images imbedded/actually good outputs?

Claude does a nice job with planning presentations but building presentations is pretty rough because designs chew up usage. I have a set of designs that it built me but image insertion is PAINFUL because it just seems to source from Wikipedia. I just figured out how to open it up to the rest of the internet/turn off just "trusted" environment but am still struggling to make quality presentations. Any recommendations for how I can use code/cowork/maybe even Fable (?) to improve my presentation outputs?
