Today, a number Kurdish political parties (including PYD this time) gathered to voice concerns over the “Syrian People’s Assembly elections,” questioning whether the process reflects inclusive political representation.

📌They criticized allocation of only 4 seats out of 210 for Kurdish representation, saying it does not accurately reflect their demographic and political weight.

📌This public statement echoes widespread fears concerning the future of Kurdish people's civil rights and political representation under the Syrian Transitional Government (STG).

📌Abdulilah Arabo, prominent Kurdish politician, told RIC the parties are “not satisfied,” but said they will not boycott the process, stressing continued efforts to secure Kurdish rights. Arabo also noted that representation concerns are not limited to Kurds, mentioning similar issues affecting other communities, including Druze and Alawites.

Statement by the Syrian Feminist Political Movement regarding the arrest of its member Khawla Barghout

The Syrian Feminist Political Movement expresses its concern regarding the arrest of its member Khawla Barghout in Damascus on 5 May.

According to a statement issued by her family, Khawla Barghout’s arrest is linked to an allegation made in the context of an ongoing investigation.

Whilst there are no indications of political motives behind the case at this stage, the circumstances of the arrest raise serious concerns regarding the lack of transparency and the nature of the legal procedures being followed.

Available information indicates that Khawla has legal representation, with her lawyer having limited access to her during her detention.

In this context, we wish to recall the provisions of the Constitutional Declaration issued in 2025:

Article 17(3) stipulates that “the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court judgement”.

Article 18(2) further affirms that “no person may be detained or have their liberty restricted except by a judicial decision”.

Article 12(2) stipulates that rights and freedoms, including the guarantees of a fair trial, form an integral part of the constitutional framework.

In light of the above, the Syrian Feminist Political Movement calls for the immediate release of Khawla Barghouth, as there are insufficient legal grounds to justify her continued detention, in accordance with the provisions and guarantees of the Constitutional Declaration.

The Syrian Feminist Political Movement expresses its solidarity with Khawla Barghout’s family and affirms its support for their efforts to pursue the case and ensure that her rights are respected.

Details of the execution of the young man, Abdullah Ahmed Al-Ramadan, in Raqqa Governatorate, following his abduction and torture have sparked widespread outrage, amid calls for the truth to be revealed and for all those involved to be held to account

According to his family’s account, Abdullah was at the barber’s when an armed group posing as security personnel arrived and forcibly took him away, before it later transpired that they were an armed gang.

The family says the incident took place in Raqqa province, before his body was later dumped in the Al-Kasra area days after his abduction.

The family confirmed that during his detention, Abdullah was subjected to the most severe forms of torture over a period of three days, before being killed in a manner they described as brutal

The family added that they only learned of his fate three days later, when they received news that his body was in the morgue of the National Hospital, where his relatives struggled to identify him due to the clear signs of torture and disfigurement on his body.

The family also stated that, according to their account, they had not received a clear official report or a coroner’s report, which further fuelled the anger and resentment among his family and acquaintances.

The circulation of videos and posts on social media, said to document the crime or show off the perpetrators, caused widespread shock among the public, with calls to stop the crimes of abduction, torture and extrajudicial killing.

According to the family, the main suspect in the crime is a member of the General Security in Latakia, accused of participating in the abduction, torture and killing, amid calls for an urgent and transparent investigation and for all those responsible for the case to be held to account.

Abdullah’s relatives have emphasised that he had no connection to any blood feud or dispute, and that he was unjustly killed without committed any crime

Kurdish parties, forces demand fair representation in Syrian People's Assembly

Kurdish political forces and parties affirmed their rejection of what they described as the "appointments" made under the guise of the Syrian People's Assembly elections, stating that these appointments do not represent the will of the Syrian people, and perpetuate policies of exclusion and marginalization against the Kurdish community.

In a joint statement issued on Friday, the parties asserted that allocating only 4 seats to Kurds out of 210 seats disregards the demographic and political weight of the Kurdish people in Syria. They demanded genuine parliamentary representation of no less than 40 seats, reflecting the Kurdish population size and their national rights.

The statement added that maintaining this limited number of seats could set a dangerous precedent that will affect the future representation of Kurds in state institutions and sovereign positions, emphasizing that the current number of seats does not reflect the free will of the Kurdish people.

The Kurdish parties reiterated their commitment to continuing their peaceful and diplomatic struggle, in cooperation with Syrian democratic forces, to build a state based on citizenship and partnership, and a constitution that recognizes the rights of all Syrian communities.

The Kurdish political parties and forces that signed the statement are:

The Kurdish Liberal Party in Syria

The Democratic Green Party

The Syrian Kurdish Democratic Accord Party

The Kurdistan Communist Party

The Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria

The Kurdistan Democratic Change Party

The Kurdistan National Rally Party

The Kurdistan Conservative Party

The Kurdish Democratic Roj Party in Syria

The Kurdistan Renewal Movement

A school Principal was shot dead two days ago in the SW. Homs countryside, near the Lebanese border. This is the latest case in a long series of attacks in the province - the only one experiencing this kind of insecurity.
