How does dye work for faded spots?

I have a very old shirt that is equally very near and dear to my heart. It’s completely dark grey and recently got a few grease stains.

When trying to scrub them out with dish soap, the color faded away in those spots. I simply want to dye it grey again, to make the spots less noticeable.

I can guess that a grey dye will make everything darker, such as the normal grey going darker as the faded spots darken too, but I wanted confirmation and clarification on my guess.

Any advice on, 1. how to proceed in general, 2. the title above, 3. how dye may behave with/on grease stains, and any more advice you think I may need (considering this would be my first time working with it), would be greatly appreciated!!

Late Night Snack Plate

My plate: Sourdough bread w/ jam, half an orange, cut up strawberries, a small, sliced apple the I paired with cinnamon sugar bugles, queso lentil puffs, half of a white cheddar babybel, and peanut butter and honey in the ramekin.

Partners plate: Other half of the sourdough bread w/ peanut butter and honey, the other half of the orange, more cut up strawberries, carrot and cucumber halves, the other half of the babybel, pretzel sticks, and ranch in the ramekin.

Not shown: another ramekin w/ salt and pepper cottage cheese.

Had to tap out just before finishing the last of my orange slices.

Get your fiber in, guys.
