My balcony garden in mid-June.

The sun is absolutely scorching. I think I need to install a shade cloth, but I just can't find the right one.

The Hosta 'Big Daddy'

Hosta 'Big Daddy' is one of my favorite large hostas.

The color balance between its blue-green leaves and white flowers is truly magnificent.

Farfugium japonicum

Prepping these Farfugium japonicum (AKA Leopard plants) for their move indoors before the heat kicks in. The sun is just too intense for them to stay outside.🥲🥲

MY Rose 'Princess Midori'

When I see other people's 'Princess Midori' roses blooming so full and beautifully, I can't help but wonder why mine isn't doing the same.

(Dragonfly: t͡ɕamd͡ʑa̠ɾi, Bed: t͡ɕamt͡ɕa̠ɾi)

Time to rearrange the plants

I adjust the placement of my plants about twice a month for two main reasons

For the view: I want to see the prettiest plants right from my main living room window.

For plant care: Depending on the season, some plants need to be moved to a shaded area, or relocated to a different zone if they are entering summer dormancy.

So... I rearranged them today, and my back hurts just as much as I'm satisfied with the result . 🥲🥲

The way I block the wind on my balcony

The way I block the wind on my balcony is different on each side.

On the left, strong winds blow straight in, so after trying various methods, I've settled on using a bamboo screen that I replace every year.

On the right, the wind hits from the 2 o'clock direction. After a lot of effort, a variegated wisteria has finally established itself there, blocking both the wind and the sun

"The flowers of Saxifraga stolonifera 'Marron Beauty'. Personally, I'm not a big fan of flowers, but I do appreciate subtle and unassuming ones like this.

First week of June, my balcony potted garden.

It's so hot that some plants have already gone into summer dormancy. 😭

Hosta 'Geojedo'. It is a small hosta featuring a light cream base dotted with green variegation.

In summer, it produces variegated leaves with deeper green hues.

white variegated Astilbe 'Hanusan'

This is a white variegated Astilbe found a few years ago at Mt. Hanusan in Korea.

It's definitely one of my absolute favorites!

Over here, we just call it 'Hanusan' after the place it was discovered.

It gets these pretty pink flowers, and the white variegation stays strong even in the summer. Plus, when it gets some sun, the edges of the leaves turn bright pink!! Maybe because of that, it doesn't get sunburnt easily 🤔

The only bummer is that it seems a lot more prone to aphids than other Astilbes.

+ And because of the leaf color, they’re actually pretty hard to spot when they do show up!

Hosta 'Utsunomai'

Hosta 'Utsunomai' is a miniature hosta from Japan. Its name means 'swirling dance'.

It grows very close to the ground with almost no leaf stems, and its leaves have a slightly twisted look.

The flower stems are also very short, making it adorable.

Tropical Vibe hosta

This is my absolute favorite among the hostas I've grown from seed over the past three years. The corrugated leaves and waxy coating give it such a tropical vibe

Delayed patterned Hosta 'Matcha Latte'

I love how this hosta emerges with a yellow center in the spring and gradually fades to white—it's so gorgeous! I also like that the netted pattern stays throughout the summer. The heavily ruffled leaf margins are really attractive, too
