Nella Pelkonen (FIN) announces retirement

She detailed the reasons for her retirement in Finnish in this interview https://www.skatingfinland.fi/henkilot/taitoluistelija-nella-pelkonen-paatti-kilpauransa/. She struggled with shin injuries for years, and during the recovery from a recent operation, realized that the joy of the sport wasn't there anymore. She talked with a mental coach about these feelings and eventually came to the decision of retirement even though home Worlds would have been around the corner (Nella is from Tampere). She will however appear in the marketing for Worlds!

Her greatest achievements were being the Finnish Champion in 2024 and the Nordic Champion in 2023, alongside appearances at Euros and Worlds in 2024.

My favourite program of hers was this short program to Los Vas a Olvidar: https://youtu.be/RRvs5V5TGQI

Millie Colling/Emma Aalto FD (open gender ice dance)

Last one from my trip to the Finnish test skates, I know we have some fans of open gender disciplines here. Millie and Emma are starting their second season together at the junior level. This FD is to Queen!

Matias Lindfors 2026 free program

From today's test skates. I don't have the short program video unfortunately. The music was announced as "Dracula".

I'm uploading videos from the competition onto my YouTube channel today, at least the winner of each discipline and some extras. They're dropping one by one as they finish rendering.

Finnish Summer Competition (test skates) results

The ones that should get the remaining Helsinki GP spots are Minja Peltonen and Matias Lindfors.

JGP spots should go to the top 2/3 of each discipline, except in ice dance where the ISU doesn't allow Colling/Aalto to compete internationally, so they will go to the 1st and the 3rd placed.

Matias Lindfors 2nd costume

This confirms that he's doing two new programs. The costume is titled "vampire waltz" which gives more of a hint towards the music. High drama as always! I wonder if this is the SP or the FS?

Matthias Versluis has gotten married!

Edit. Mixed up the photographer and the wife... His wife's name is Janni, and they've been together for over 10 years. Congratulations to the couple!

Would a Garmin watch be right for me?

I'm looking for a smart/fitness watch to replace my previous Polar Vantage M. I would like a bit more smartwatch capability than that one had, but with equal focus to workout tracking and general health.

What I'm looking for:

- Small face, 38-42 mm.

- At least basic smartwatch functionality like receiving notifications and messages, setting alarms etc., maybe paying with the watch too.

- At least basic workout tracking. My main sports are dancing and figure skating, but I also take walks and occasionally bike and swim. I also go hiking about once a year and would like for the battery to last on a hike of 4-7 days.

- Some sort of a safety feature for someone who lives alone; e.g. fall detection, being able to call the emergency number from the watch.

- I am interested in health statistics like sleep tracking.

- Ideally a sleek and unisex look, big and bulky watches don't suit me.

I have been looking at the Venu 3S the most, it would also fit into my budget. Does any other model come to mind? Also, would the Venu 4 be such a massive upgrade over the 3S that it would be worth an extra 150-200 €?

Looking for: 200-400 €, basic features, fitness, safety, small wrist

So I'm sure there are hundreds of these posts, so thank you if you manage to answer this.

My previous watch was a sports watch (Polar Vantage), but that gave up the ghost a couple of years ago and now I'm getting the itch for a new one that would also have some smart features in addition to fitness. Budget is around 200-400 euros, and should be available in the EU.

Features I'm looking for:

- Small face (38-42 mm)

- Basic functionality like seeing notifications from the phone, setting haptic alarms, etc.

- At least basic fitness tracking with special props if it has profiles for figure skating and dance!

- Some sort of a safety feature for someone who lives alone: e.g. being able to call the emergency number, fall detection.

- At least decent battery life (2-3 days, bonus if longer).

- I would also be interested in sleep and other health statistics.

I have a OnePlus phone so must be Android compatible. My frontrunners were Samsung watches but I hate the fact that some features are locked behind a Samsung phone.

Helsinki International Ballet Competition 2026

I thought I'd post the link to the streams in case someone is interested. Unfortunately the streams have not been great quality, the first day especially had some problems, but it's not unwatchable. The page is in Finnish, but the stream should work without a VPN even abroad.

This competition is organised every four years, and has three rounds.

Preliminaries: Two classical variations

Semis: One contemporary choreography

Finals: Either two classical variations (different from preliminaries) or one pas de deux, plus one contemporary choreo (different from semis)

So as you can see, the point of this competition is to show range with 5-6 different variations and choreographies, as well as ability in both classical and contemporary ballet.

There are three age categories: juniors (15-18 y), young professionals (19-21 y), and seniors (22-25 y).

Tampere Worlds 2027 ticket pricing

So unfortunately it will be expensive, even by Finnish standards. Only all-event tickets will drop in the first batch next week, and you can choose between "premium" which means long sides of the rink (1245 €) or curve which means the curves (675 €). At the moment, balcony all-event tickets seem to not be available.

The information for day tickets and the "show" which we assume means the gala are behind the link, it's not cheap either. Those tickets will drop in early autumn afaik.
