Mention it’s a proof of concept when I submit?

I made a standalone short that’s a proof of concept for a feature. My dream/goal is to get enough traction in festivals to fund the feature version. Should I mention this in my cover letter to festivals or on the project page? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to communicating this to programmers?

Longer than desired trip. Tips for mentally preparing

Due to a set of annoying circumstances, my 2 week trip to Europe has ballooned to 2 months. The trouble is, I'm on a budget and having a hard time wrapping my head around being on the road this long. Whenever I mention this to my friends, I get a lot of "high class problems" faux pity but no real advice.

I'd love any advice you have for preemptively fighting off homesickness, finding ways to settle into a routine, and not spending a ton of money bopping from city to city.

I realize this is more of a mental game than not, so any frameshifts you can offer and anecdotes you could share would be most helpful.

Submitting while traveling. Tips and backup plans?

I'm going to be away from my editing suite for the rest of the summer, just as I'm ramping up my festival submissions. I'm working on getting the cut completely locked before I leave, but I'm scared that I'm going to miss something and be unable to fix it from the road.

I'm curious what easily overlooked tasks I should do now to make sure there are no loose ends as I travel. For instance, I'm creating the subtitle files right now in all the languages I think I might need. I'll also put the resolve files in dropbox in case I need to borrow some help while I travel.

Any other ideas of things I can make sure to have handled before I leave, or emergency scenarios I should plan for?

How to say "I'm horny" in a light, silly way?

All the translators are giving me envie, but that doesn't feel right. This is a casual, silly exchange between sweethearts (a woman saying it to a man), essentially "Oops you did something hot and now I can't focus on work"

Submit to extended deadline or wait until next year?

What's the thinking around submitting to a fest's extended deadline versus waiting until next year?

I'm working on the sound and color for my first short and I'm running into a bunch of upcoming deadlines. I recently read that the extended deadline for a lot of festivals is really just to squeeze in that last 5-10% of films for programming, so it's a more expensive submission for a lower likelihood of acceptance.

Is this true? Is it better to wait and submit a fully-ready film at the early deadline for the next round? Or a almost-ready film for the extended deadlines?

Anyone else feel guilty hiding inside on gorgeous Outdoor Kid weather weekends?

I SHOULD be going on a waterfall hike or going cider tasting or grabbing a book and heading to Oxbow, right? So why am I sorting my book collection and hiding in my room?
Anyone else have good weather guilt?

If you had a heads-up that your dept was getting cut in a few years, what would you do?

I landed my dream job 4 years ago, fresh out of grad school. I love my students and I've worked hard to improve the status and enrollment of my department. However, budget cuts are looming and word on the street is that my department may just get cut wholesale. It's all rumors at this point, and I'm a lowly AssProf, so I doubt I'll hear anything until the axe is already descending.

The hardest part is, I teach the Humanities in a pretty higher-ed scarce place. So not only is this my dream job, it feels like it's my ONLY job. It's not like the private sector is clamoring for English Lit professors with an emphasis in Gender Studies. But I love where I live and don't want to move.

So, my question to you, if you had a few years to prepare for the worst: what would you do? How would you prepare (or fight?!)? Could I try to butter up my dean for more info? Warn the union? Just save and hope? Something else?

Who do you show your rough cuts to?

Just curious on this Monday morning. When you have a rough cut, who do you send it to for notes/thoughts? Are they all in the industry? Or do you send it to cinephiles and/or friends with good taste? How important is it to you that they understand filmmaking versus enjoy films? What about collaborators? Do you want any of them to weigh in during the editorial process?

Update on yesterday’s antique store finds!

Thanks for your help yesterday! I swung back by the antique store and picked up the Sheaffer and the Cross. The resin in the Sheaffer is a little scuffed and it needs a good clean, but as long as I can find a good feed for it, I think I’ll enjoy it. Nib is 18k and made in the USA.

Meanwhile, I just liked the shape and heft of the Cross. Got both for $50 and I’m looking forward to seeing how they write!

Making a transition from VO to diegetic

My opening scene begins with a VO of a politician doing a speech, and as the scene progresses we slowly hear the quality turn into that coming from headphones that our MC is listening to. How would I blend two different EQs from the sweet VO to a tinny headphone sound in a way that feels seamless? I'm also mixing in footsteps/streetnoise to establish her POV.

I'm cutting in Resolve, but I also use Audacity.

TIA!

Maybe i haven’t played long enough but anyone else think it’s bullshit I can’t get a bevvie from Dionysus? I want to drink some Satyr pool water dammit!

Okay but really how fun would it be to drink that pool water and then get a 15% buff and 5% clumsiness for a few rounds? All courage, no coordination. Who’s with me?!
