Saw the first two episodes premiered at TIFF last night
I won't spoil too much, but I can tell you that they were pretty great.
It's not a by-the-numbers retelling of the original story, but it is very aware of the De Palma movie. It tells the story in a way where it assumes that you've seen the '76 movie, but by the end of the first episode, you already know that there will be differences...you just don't know quite how big they'll be.
The confidence of Mike as a storyteller really comes across. The whole time, I had the feeling that Mike knew in advance what I was thinking, and he was speaking directly to my expectations. The editing and cinematography do a great job leading you on and making sure you're getting the beats the way you should be getting them.
The cast are all spot on, and unsurprisingly the character work is the highlight of the show. Summer H. Howell (Carrie) and Alison Thornton (Chris) carry the heart of the movie and they're both excellent. I can't imagine it was easy for them to step into the shoes of such iconic characters and try to make them their own, but they both pull it off.
The Mike-regulars (the 'Flanmily') are great...Rahul Kohli's IMDB is showing him as only in 1 episode, but he was in both of the first 2 and it sure seems like he's got a bigger role to play in the later ones. Kate Siegel is also listed for only one episode, and that's clearly incorrect too. She shows up for just a few seconds in the first episode, and her character is something entirely new to the story. It's not exactly clear what she'll be doing in later episodes, but Mike is taking the story in a different direction and Katie's character is going to play a major role in those differences.
Samantha Sloyan's take on Margret White is wild. Not what I expected, but when I saw what they were doing it made so much sense. The thing that makes her especially terrifying is that you probably really know people just like her.
Matthew Lillard is great as the principal who has the unfortunate job of having to deal with her.
One of my low-key favorite scenes was between Carrie and the school guidance councillor, where they just exchange quotes from classic novels. It's a really great moment where both characters have a lot of things going on under the surface, and find literary quotes as a common language to speak with each other.
The music drops were frequent and excellent. I'm looking forward to getting a track list of the songs used. All current, modern music; with the exception of what I think might have been a reference in the score to Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day'. I'll have to re-watch to confirm that I really heard that.
All in all the episodes were very entertaining. The modernization of the characters and setting are fun.
But the plot differences that are hinted at have the potential to be pretty huge, and to be honest, they also have the potential to derail a lot of what makes the original Carrie great. Mike is clearly changing the ending, maybe pretty significantly. I'm curious to see where he's going.

Just thinking, one of my favorite movie experiences was seeing Terminator 2 at a midnight showing the Thursday night before it opened. Absolutely incredible, and looking back, it felt like I'd sort of had to earn that experience, and maybe that made it better?
Back then you couldn't buy assigned seats, or advance tickets at all.
If you wanted to see that show, you had to go to the theater 2 or 3 hours in advance and wait in line. If you got there late, you'd get a bad seat, or worse, the show would sell out and you were SOL.
So for 2 hours you were standing in a line that wrapped around the building, just dying of anticipation with your friends. By the time the show started, the whole audience was so pumped that the opening credits would get cheers and woops!
Maybe that's part of why audiences are sorta shit today. If you had to earn a good seat on opening weekend with your time and patience, you're be a lot less likely to talk through a movie or waste it on your phone.
Reminder that Cineplex theaters in Canada will be showing the movie at a TON of locations across the country
Early matinee Saturday
If you haven't seen it at a theater yet GO!
It's a very different experience with a big screen and a theater grade sound system.
And tickets are only $6!!!
There are a handful of screenings on Sunday too if you can't make it out tomorrow.
