Shopping for my first cruiser

I’ve been riding for 3 years and I’m looking to buy my first Harley. I’ve been browsing the used market for a Sportster 1200. Mid 90’s to early 2000’s. (I’d like to have a carbureted one.) Is there anything in this year range I should look out for? What’s considered high mileage on an evo engine? What’s too much to pay? I’m experienced with wrenching on cars so I don’t mind having to fix up a bike, but I don’t want to end up with something that’s going to need major work. Any advice is appreciated.

I posted this in some Harley specific groups but if you have any suggestions on a different type of cruiser, I’m open to that too. Currently ride an old Honda CL350.

Slow revving 4.0

I have two XJ’s, a 96 and a 98. I’ve owned both of them for 11 years. The 96 is in much better condition, with about 100,000 less miles, yet it feels very sluggish compared to the 98. The drivetrains are identical, the only difference is the 96 has a 2.5” lift. They both have the same size tires and gear ratio.

The 96 lugs pretty hard when you punch the gas, and it seems like it takes forever to work it past 3,000rpm. The 98 runs like a scaled dog. I have never been able to figure out what the difference is and was wondering if there’s something obvious I’m missing here. Was there a change in how the engine was tuned in the second generation? Something wrong with the transmission maybe? It just has way more pep.

Lug nut torque spec

What do you guys torque your lug nuts to? I did a brake job today and the tire shop I went to last year had them so tight I had to sit on a breaker bar to bust them free. I dug out an old Haynes manual and was surprised to see it called for only 75 ft lbs. Does that seem low? I’ve always done 110. I have aluminum rims if that makes any difference.

Bats in chimney

I’ve got brown bats roosting in my chimney. The mortar desperately needs repointed, there are spots between some bricks at the top where the mortar is completely gone and that’s where they come in and out. The chimney has a liner in it and a flue that vents my hot water heater. My question is, where do brown bats go in the winter? Do they migrate south or do they stay here and hibernate? I’m in the Midwestern US. I was wondering if I could just wait until winter and have the chimney repaired, but obviously I don’t want to trap them inside if they spend the winter in there.

Black marks on 3m 60923 cartridges

Just opened this new pack of cartridges. Both have these black marks on them. Mold? Doesn’t wipe off.

CL350 Stumbling from 4-5k RPM

1971 CL350. Recently rebuilt the carbs and had it running good for a couple weeks, but now it’s developed a stumble from 4-5k RPMS. Runs good below and above that, but stumbles and pops and doesn’t want to accelerate until you slowly force it above 5k, then it runs smooth and pulls hard. Obviously I’m going to open the carbs up again, but does anyone have any tips on what else might be causing this? I’ve had this bike for a couple years now but I haven’t really torn into it other than basic maintenance and a carb rebuild.
