250th birthday

I stopped in to see my sister and niece as a side trip traveling across country

They were watching the 250th USA celebration on TV. I told my niece that 50 years ago today, I was celebrating America's Bicentennial in Washington DC standing at the base of the Washington Monument watching fireworks. She looked at me as if I had three eyes. 50 years ago? That does sound old, huh?

Conversations not private

I have hatred for unsolicited sales calls. We lost our family patriarch yesterday. Notifications went out in texts and calls telling the bad news. A heavy blanket hangs us all.

I just received a phone sales harassor trying to sales funeral services and planning. This is less than 24 hours have passed!

Don't tell me it was a coincidence.

Drive vs fly?

I just got in last night from a 4 day drive from Utah to Georgia. Return trip actually. It was arguably a "Ground Hog Day" experience. 500 mile days were the norm. I felt like a mail delivery driver. Through rain and heat and snow and ice we crossed the Appalachians, through the Midwest, over the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Through a crumbling Saint Louis, from Kansas City to Kansas City. The flats of Nebraska and Colorado were amazing. We actually watched weather form that we drove through the next day. Wyoming was next with 85 mph speed limits creeping up to 3 digit driving! Accessed the High Uintahs and the Wasatch Mountains and finally the Great Salt Lake. Whew! Why did I do this? Job? No. Vacation? No. Really, my reason was very simple...

I Cannot Stand Flying! I hate everything about it from the smell of dirty feet, body odor, stale perfume, bad breath, seat bumping, coughing travelers, recycled air, thighs touching thighs, babies crying, and it goes on and on.

No, I will take a slow drive and see the actual purple mountain majesties to the wheat fields, from ocean to ocean and speak with locals along the way. A long time ago, I learned something a wise old traveler said;

"It's the journey not the destination!"

Does anyone else hate flying this much?

I am shrinking

Since my youth, I have continued to get shorter. As of today's doctor visit, I have lost a touch over 4 inches of height. I do walk with curved shoulders but still. Has anyone else noticed your height getting shorter?

No roof, no floor, no windows, no door. Homeless.

Healthy and strong willed teachers, skilled workers, computer literate, nurses, office workers, vets, among many others have fallen. Fallen hard.

Some were layed off, some had jobs terminated, some were kicked out of homes, some were in too much debt. They have work skills and can still be self-sufficient and an asset the society. How is this happening and what will change it?

This is not an ask for money! I am not fund raising! I am not homeless! Truly curious.

This stone was found on the banks of the Ohio River. It wanted to be a seal pup.

Homeless and helpless

No roof, no floor, no windows, no door, Homeless.

No job, no prospects, nowhere to go, Helpless

When I see the homeless on our streets trying to get out of the weather. Cardboard lean-tos, tents, beater RVs, and plastic sheeting, is the norm. They have lost jobs, family, and friends. Veterans have fallen through the cracks. Educated people and skilled people have found themselves homeless. This is America! This shouldn't be. What can we do to stop this insanity?

Why did 70 change me so?

I have laughed at age my first 69 years. Although I am acutely aware of those that pass young, still, age was a concept, just another trip around the sun.

Now that I am in my 7th decade, I seem to reflect more on what I've done and where I've been. A birthday is still another orbit but now I see each day more clearly. I smile more at strangers. I enjoy the conversations with those my age. Although time goes by faster, I see and hear more. I am excited about my time left and what lies in store for me. There is so much left to do and explore!
