Previous Owner Installed Cam But Never Started Engine

I recently bought a project C20. The previous owner was an older gentleman who had lost interest in the truck, and the project sat for years.

He says he installed a comp cams high energy 268H into an otherwise stock 350 out of a ‘78 K10. It’s my understanding that the engine never ran after he installed the cam.

So, after it’s sat all this time, and there’s a lot of unknowns, what should my process be regarding breaking in the cam? I’d prefer to avoid catastrophic engine failure, but I’m also reluctant to tear everything back down to inspect the cam.

I appreciate any insights.

I’m trying to sort out my ‘67 C20 project. The previous owner was attempting an engine swap, but lost interest.

He told me the engine is a 350 out of a ‘78 K10. I’m curious what differences between the engines could be blamed for the fan shroud issue.

Do long water pumps locate the fan lower than short pumps? I’m assuming the fan is the original fan from the ‘78. Is a stock ‘67 fan a smaller diameter? Am I missing something obvious?

The engine sits in the rear position against the firewall. The shroud is the 4x4 model from LMC. It bolts into the mounting points without issue.
