Day 178 of The 13.5k Coins Savings Grind.
I started with a balance of 0 on January 1st.
Full transparency up front: I currently have 150 "paid" coins in my account, but those came entirely from the Alaba and Nuñez starter packs, which I bought using App Store gift rewards.
My current on-screen balance as of June 27 is 7,760 coins. However, to give an accurate reflection of the total coins generated by this account, I have updated the progress table below to include the 750 coins I spent on the Xabi manager pack back in February (which was a planned spend from day one).
Here’s the full progress log reflecting total generated coins so far:
| Date | Balance | Coin Increase |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 1 | 0 | — |
| Feb 23 | 2020 | +2020 |
| Mar 22 | 3220 | +1200 |
| Apr 24 | 4340 | +1120 |
| May 26 | 5710 | +1370 |
| Jun 27 | 8510 | +2800 |
As you can see, this past month has been a massive anomaly. This 2,800-coin surge is heavily driven by the ongoing World Cup (Football Festival) campaign rewards, along with me collecting more than half of the invitation campaign milestones (I'll wrap the rest of those up soon).
To put it in perspective:
Normal Grind (Jan - May): Averaged ~1,170 coins per month (~39 coins/day).
World Cup Campaign (May - Jun): Netted 2,800 coins in just 32 days (~87 coins/day).
Realistically, once this campaign ends, the coin acquisition rate will drop back down to that normal 1,170/month baseline.
A Quick Word on the Hate
I’ve received a lot of nasty comments on previous posts for choosing to save instead of spend. All I can say is this: I personally don’t like spending real money on free mobile games. If this was a proper console or PC football game where I paid upfront for the title, then yes, I’d happily spend extra for content to enhance the experience. But on a mobile game, it just doesn’t feel worth it to me.
If you don’t like these posts, just ignore them. There’s no need to get personal over somebody else’s way of enjoying a game. To those people: GET A LIFE.
To everyone else, thank you genuinely for the support. Do share your own progress, your savings journeys, your pulls, and your experiences down below. Seeing others stay disciplined honestly helps keep me motivated too! 😅
Phase 11 Done. Easily othe most frustrating Division 1 climb I’ve ever experienced.
I am completely exhausted.
I usually cruise into Division 1 with a 60–70% win rate playing less than half the matches I put in this time, but Phase 11 was an absolute mind gauntlet for me. As you can see, I had to grind out a brutal 157 matches, sitting on a miserable 41% win rate (65 W, 43 D, 49 L) before I finally figured out how to cross the finish line.
For the vast majority of this phase, nothing worked. I was constantly hitting the crossbar, headers felt completely broken, and my defenders were turning into absolute statues after the 60th minute. I kept running into fully stacked squads running Long Ball Counter (LBC) with sub-10k ranks, spamming 2-pass lofted through balls. I’d dominate possession, make 100+ passes, take 8–10 shots just to score once, and they would hit one atrocious long ball from a ridiculous angle and score.
I usually run Quick Counter (QC) with Xabi Alonso, and while I know people will blame the high defensive line, it has always worked for me in previous phases. This time, it felt like an invitation to get destroyed. I tried switching to pure LBC, then to Possession, but I kept ending up back at square one—win one game, then draw or lose the next four.
The Turnaround:
Today, I decided to stop my usual style and actually play what the match engine was demanding. I made drastic changes to the squad:
- Tactical Flexibility: I stopped sticking to one manager. I used Out Wide to smoothly counter LBC, and kept QC strictly for matching up against other QC or Possession users.
- The 3-Back System: I switched to 3 at the back and manually set tight marking on the opponent's primary strikers.
- Patience over Pressing: I stopped aggressively switching players and forcing manual presses. I stopped over-complicating my passing sequences and focused heavily on cutting off lanes.
- Keeper Swap: I benched Kahn and started ST David De Gea (DDG).
The adjustment paid off immediately. I managed a solid 12 wins, 5 draws, and 3 losses in my final run, finally hitting Division 1 with an 1,801 rating. Learning how to manually counter the press and absorb the physical play of LBC merchants was the only way out.
Even though I made it, I seriously need a break from this game. Konami’s complete lack of viable competition means the gameplay loops can feel like pure punishment if you aren't playing completely optimally.
How has Phase 11 been treating everyone else? Did you guys experience a similar wall, or did your usual setups actually hold up this time around?
The grind is becoming real now… but I’m starting to question whether delaying progress for future packs is actually worth it
Day 146 of the 13.5k coins savings journey and the current balance has now reached 4960 coins as of 26th May.
The number excludes the 750 coins spent on Xabi because that purchase was fully planned from the beginning and was considered part of the roadmap. So the actual total coins accumulated throughout this journey till now is 5710 coins generated in 146 days.
Here’s the full progress log so far:
| Date | Balance | Coin Increase Since Previous Log |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 1 | 0 | — |
| Feb 23 | 1270 | +1270 |
| Mar 22 | 2470 | +1200 |
| Apr 24 | 3590 | +1120 |
| May 26 | 4960 | +1370 |
Overall, the grind currently sits at around 39 coins earned per day on average including the planned Xabi spend. If this pace continues consistently throughout the year, the projection by year end could realistically land somewhere around 14k–15k coins even with one or two controlled planned spends in between. That means the 13.5k target is no longer some unrealistic target, it’s genuinely achievable now.
Assuming the upcoming World Cup packs are actually good and Konami releases something like a strong double booster manager along with at least one year-long usable epic, would spending around 1800 coins there actually be worth it? Because technically, if that pack improves the account for an entire year, maybe delaying the 13.5k target slightly is justified.
Would genuinely love to know your thoughts on the World Cup pack dilemma and how you guys decide.
I’ve seen many people begin this exact same journey and then slowly get greedy midway through. One “small spend” becomes another and suddenly 5–6k coins disappear, which is basically around 5 months of grinding gone in moments. That’s the scary part.
Honestly, this type of grind isn’t for everybody. Either you fully commit to it or you don’t do it at all.
And one more thing. I’ve received a lot of hate on some of my previous posts for saving instead of spending. But all I can really say is this: I personally don’t like spending real money on free mobile games. If this was a proper console or PC football game where I already paid upfront to buy the game itself, then yes, I’d happily spend extra for content and enjoy the experience more. But on mobile, it just doesn’t feel worth it to me.
