Se o Estado quisesse realmente incentivar a formação de património das famílias, nem sequer precisaria de abolir completamente os 28%.

Isto criaria um incentivo muito forte para investimento de longo prazo em vez de especulação.

Para o Estado, também há uma lógica: não estaria necessariamente a perder 28% de uma mais-valia que já existe. Poderia estar a incentivar pessoas a investir durante décadas, criando mais poupança interna, mais capital disponível e maior participação das famílias nos mercados.

O Estado tem um problema estrutural: as pensões públicas dependem de contribuições futuras, enquanto a demografia portuguesa tende a tornar esse modelo mais difícil de sustentar. Ao mesmo tempo, o cidadão médio é incentivado relativamente pouco a construir uma segunda camada de património financeiro.

A pensão pública é a primeira camada; o património financeiro individual é a segunda. O Estado devia incentivar a construção da segunda.

Could the AI data-center boom finally make consoles obsolete?

I've been thinking about something that connects two trends that don't seem to be discussed together enough: the massive investment in AI data centers and the future of gaming.

As consumers, the current console model feels increasingly outdated. We spend hundreds of euros on hardware that eventually becomes obsolete, then buy games individually — often at €60–80 or more — and when the next generation arrives, we're expected to buy new hardware again.

At the same time, companies are investing enormous amounts of money in GPUs and data centers for AI.

So here's my question:

If AI demand eventually doesn't fully use all this GPU capacity, could some of that infrastructure be used for cloud gaming instead?

Rather than everyone owning an increasingly powerful console, imagine a subscription model:

TV / PC / phone + controller → cloud gaming service → remote GPU/data center → game streamed to you

You wouldn't necessarily need to buy a new console every 5–7 years. The hardware running the game would be in the cloud and could be upgraded continuously.

You could potentially have a monthly subscription that gives you access to a large game library, with games running remotely. More demanding games wouldn't require a more powerful console at home — the data center would simply use newer GPUs.

And this could potentially work particularly well if AI infrastructure became more flexible.

For example:

High AI demand:
GPU capacity → AI workloads

Lower AI demand / excess capacity:
GPU capacity → cloud gaming / rendering / other workloads

Instead of building completely separate infrastructure for AI and gaming, perhaps some of the same GPU infrastructure could serve different workloads depending on demand.

I realise cloud gaming already exists — GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, etc. — so the concept of streaming games isn't new.

What I'm wondering about is something slightly different:

Could the enormous GPU infrastructure being built for AI eventually become the foundation for a much larger, general-purpose cloud computing platform for consumers, with gaming as one of its major uses?

The biggest challenges I can think of are latency, geographic distribution, GPU virtualization, network capacity, game licensing and the economics of running thousands or millions of simultaneous gaming sessions.

I'm not an engineer, so I'm interested in whether this idea makes technical and economic sense.

Is anyone already working on this, or are there fundamental reasons why this wouldn't scale?
