can i apply to mit as a freshman while doing my first semester at iit?

hey guys im from india, so im planning my college timeline and need some advice. basically i will be giving jee advanced in mid 2028 and if i get into iit i plan to join the campus in july/august.

but my dream is actually MIT usa so i want to apply there in november 2028 for the freshman cycle (fall 2029 entry). my plan is to basically stay at iit for just one semester/year and then leave if i get into mit.

but im confused about the freshman vs transfer rules. if im already taking classes at iit in august will mit force me to apply as a transfer student? because i know transfer acceptance rates are basically impossible. or can i still apply as a first year applicant since i wont have finished a full year yet?

also my 9th and 10th grades were pretty bad (60% and 82%) but im working on a massive upward trend for 11th and 12th plus aiming for a high sat score. if anyone has done this or knows the exact rules please help out thanks

I am looking for recommendations for the ICSE/ISC schools in delhi for 11th and 12th, specifically looking at the quality of the teachers. Which schools have the faculty for Science, Math, and English? I want to avoid schools where students are forced to rely entirely on external tuitions

Also where i can build some extracurriculars

I want a reality check

For students or alumni familiar with Massachusetts Institute of Technology admissions and research culture:

What are some hard reality checks that students aspiring for MIT genuinely need to understand early?

Not “how to get in” advice, but things people often underestimate — whether about academics, research, competition, mindset, workload, creativity, initiative, communication skills, or the difference between being a strong student vs being a strong researcher/innovator.

I’m currently a Class 11 student from India interested in AI, robotics, and material science, and I’d rather understand the difficult truths early instead of building unrealistic expectations.

Would appreciate honest perspectives.

MIT admission advice

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in Class 11 from Bhagalpur, India, studying in a dummy school while preparing for JEE through PW. Alongside JEE prep, I’m deeply interested in research and innovation, especially in AI, robotics, and material science, and I aspire to study at MIT in the future.

I know the competition is extremely high, but what motivates me is not just getting a job — I genuinely want to become an innovator and work on meaningful research projects in the future.

Right now, I’m:

  • preparing for Olympiads and aiming to clear higher stages
  • learning Python for AI and simulations
  • working on ideas related to material science simulations using Python and VS Code
  • planning to prepare seriously for SAT and IELTS as well

Because of financial limitations, I couldn’t move to coaching hubs like Delhi, so I’m trying to build myself using the resources available to me in Bhagalpur.

I wanted honest advice from people familiar with MIT admissions or research-oriented careers:

  • What should I focus on during Classes 11–12 to build a strong MIT application profile?
  • How important are Olympiads, independent projects, research work, and extracurriculars?
  • What kind of AI/robotics/material science projects actually stand out?
  • Are there mistakes Indian applicants commonly make while applying to MIT?

I would genuinely appreciate any guidance or realistic advice.
