About some Granular synths - GR-1 vs Torso S4 vs Evil Pet

Hi there,

I've found myself in a somewhat odd situation: I currently have some gear that I own, along with some gear that has been in my possession for quite a while. A good friend of mine left the country without taking all of his equipment, so some of it ended up staying with me.

More specifically, I own a Tasty Chips GR-1 and a Torso S-4, while among my friend's gear I have an Endorphin Evil Pet and a Hologram Microcosm.

I'm heavily into ambient music and quite familiar with the gear I own, but right now I have the opportunity to put several devices designed for somewhat similar purposes side by side, and I'm genuinely wondering which one stands out the most.

The GR-1 is a very complex machine capable of delivering rich, highly layered sounds, but it comes with a rather unfriendly interface and a fairly steep learning curve. The Torso S-4 is much more immediate and hands-on, but its price is high and, in my opinion, the sound quality isn't quite on the same level. That said, it's a fantastic machine to use and an incredibly fun sound mangler.

I've also had the chance to spend some time with the Microcosm, the highly praised granular effects pedal. To be honest, though, I wasn't as impressed by it as many others seem to be. It's certainly nice, but I found myself using only a couple of parameters 80% of the time, especially Mosaic. Still, it can produce some beautiful results.

The Evil Pet is completely new territory for me. I'd heard about it and watched a few reviews online, but I'd never actually played one before. After spending a few hours with it, I have to say I'm definitely more impressed by it than I was by the Microcosm.

I know that all of these devices are fundamentally different (and that two of them are pedals rather than standalone instruments), but they also share a lot of common ground. That's why I thought I'd start this discussion and hear other people's opinions, perhaps it could also help anyone who's considering buying one of these machines.

Cheers

Subsequent 37 editor lag on MacOS - any solution?

Hi there,

Just got a subsequent 37 and installed the editor, i m using an older iMac running Catalina.

I can use the presets & patches but the most annoying aspect is related to the sidebard scrolling through the different menus, which is very lagging. Before the Sub37 I had a S25 and the editor worked perfectly on the same computer.

Any advice in order to resolve or at least ameliorate the issue?

Thanks in advance

* I have read about the Rosetta option but most of the reports I have found online are related to the hardware disconnecting from the editor or patches not working, not necessarly lag

A collection of moogs

Hello, I am interested to build up a set of moogs, 6 in total. But do some of them share a lot of similarities, so it will be redundant to have them all?

These are the moogs I'm interested in:

- Moog Matriarch - Mother-32 - Subharmonicon - Spectravox - Labyrinth - Minitaur

Subsequent 37 Editor - I can download just the 37 CV one...why?

Hello there,

I've just bought a brand new subsequent 37, upgrading from the subsequent 25. For the 25 I had the dedicated editor and everything worked pristine. Now I m facing the moment of reaching for the S37 editor.

On the Moog website > S37 download section / there is only the S37 Cv editor. I understand that the 37 CV editor is a bit different from the S37 one, so I just wanna ask you if there is any possibility to reach somewhere/somehow the original S37 editor or if the CV version would be anyway suited.

Many thanks in advance

Maybe one of the most brutal form of music concrete, using sounds generated by your body in order to achieve a sonic conceptual output.

Heartbroken (2026) involves a modified medical stethoscope to which an amplifier and a custom casing have been added. The heartbeats it captures are passed through a distortion pedal and ultimately into a speaker. https://ilrumore.bandcamp.com/
