I released my first EP!

I just bought my first synthesizer 2 weeks ago and I got so inspired pressing random keys that it morphed into something dark, ambient, atmospheric, and sensual. I decided to whip up some AI art for a cover and release it. I don't understand why other artists take years to perfect their craft when they could just load a preset, hit a few keys, and add some reverb. What even is mixing and mastering? Who cares? We're making ambient baby!

Techno/Tribe hardware producers: How the fuck do you start from absolute zero? Fell into the gear trap (Pocket Operators -> Roland T-8/P-6) and completely paralyzed.

Hi everyone,

I need some serious, raw advice from people who produce Techno or Tribe Techno using hardware.

I am completely stuck. I actually started a while ago with Pocket Operators, but I abandoned them because I couldn't understand how to make them work. I fell into the classic trap of thinking: "Maybe it's just these specific machines, I need something better." So I moved on and bought a Roland T-8 and a P-6. In total, I’ve spent around €400 on gear.

Now, after months of total paralysis, I’ve realized the brutal truth: it wasn't a hardware problem. The problem is ME. No machine in the world is going to magically sound the way I want if I don't know what the fuck I am doing.

Every single time I sit down in front of these Rolands, I get massive anxiety. I feel like a complete idiot and I end up turning them off after 30 minutes to go smoke a joint out of pure frustration and defeat.

I know LITERALLY NOTHING about how electronic music actually works or how a track is structurally built on hardware. Every tutorial online is either a piece of shit for Ableton, or a video where the guy assumes you already have a musical background. They toss around terms like Decay, Tune, Levels, Envelopes... there are 3,000 different functions blinking at me, but I have no conceptual clue what they actually mean, how they interact with each other, or how they are supposed to sound "good" together to create a Techno vibe.

There are no books for this. There are no courses for absolute beginners who don't want to use a computer but want to learn the physical language of hardware from scratch. I feel completely locked out.

To those who produce Techno/Tribe on hardware and started with zero knowledge: How did you break through this wall? How did you learn to understand what the knobs actually do to the structure of a track? Is there a mental framework, a specific approach, or a learning method that doesn't treat you like you already know everything? I don't want to give up and I don't want to buy more gear, I just want to learn how to use what I have.
Thank you.

Sold My VCO and the new one is in the mail.

I bought a Qu-bit Chord v2, and its in the mail.
USPS Mightve lost it.
I already made space in the rack.
I'm sequencing chords in my head in preparation.

This reminds me of when I first put my first system together and how I'd have these pieces
that didn't do much of anything for months.

I should focus on making patterns with blinking lights

After making a DIY HiChord, I'm working on a custom tracker software for my $70 Linux Handheld

Since I am not able to afford a $660 M8 Tracker, I bought myself an Anbernic RG35XX Pro for a tenth of the price and, after some time, found out how to install custom software on it. I am working on a custom tracker software: It has 5 tracks, with one voice per track, some low-quality instruments like a sampler, drumkit, slicer and a minimal FM synth engine. You can load samples, switch between a bunch of cute themes and save & load projects already.

I built the software completely from scratch and in a way that it should be able to support other hardware as well (as it only requires the DPAD, A/B/X/Y, menu, select and start; no shoulder buttons or analog sticks atm)

In a world of high prices and RAM and chip shortages, it's nice to see what you can do with a cheap 1gb RAM device and a bunch of time :)

All these fucking cables and my sequence is 4 bars with 6 notes

I did it exactly right.

if I add any more cables, I'll have to take some of those notes away.

"Symbolism"

make sure you're tuned to A=442 for fullest effect. Extra bonus points if you're using fractal harmonies and sacred geometry in your song structure.

Man whose living relies on consumerism complains about consumerism

This hypocrite is why I do not like ANY of these synthfluencers/geartubers/shills (except the Bad Gear guy, who's hilarious and awesome). And people who have parasocial relationships with them are just WEIRD.

They want us to pretend they're not conning us while they're conning us.

Under the notion that a broken c(l)ock is still right twice a day, though, this fuckface did teach me how to use the Dirtywave M8, which I very much appreciate.

I still don't like him.

Trying to integrate Moog semi-modulars into my workflow.

I’m new to the modular workflow but I am loving the Subharmonicon just to kind of have running all the time, the backing sounds can be really fun. The Mother-32 I’ve been running external MIDI into in order to get some easy dynamics into the sequencing. I haven’t really wrapped my head around the Hold/Rest/Tie functionality fully yet at all.

Has anyone found interesting ways of integrating the moog semimodulars with other standalone hardware?

I’m kind of confused about what to do with the DFAM when most of my drum machine experience is with samplers (MPC) or multitrack machines (Elektron, Roland) with long sequencing capability. Is it a rhythm generator? What angle have you approached successfully?

Abroad in Vietnam. Blown away that I can just... whip it out.

Literally have my IEMs and USB power and I can just go to town. If only I could direct record samples!!

Music Gear Agreement

Who's with me here:

The Music Gear Peace Treaty (2026–2027)

I hereby acknowledge the following:

I have enough synthesizers.

I have enough plugins.

I have enough compressors, reverbs, delays, EQs, saturators, tape emulations, mastering suites, spectral processors, analog-modeling devices, and effects.

I have enough MIDI controllers to pilot a small spacecraft.

I further acknowledge that:

Buying another piece of gear will not magically make me finish songs. The next plugin will not write a better melody. The next synthesizer will not suddenly reveal the chorus I've been searching for.

Therefore, I enter into this agreement:

From today until one year from today, I will purchase no new musical hardware, software, plugins, sample packs, or instruments.

Exceptions: Replacing equipment that has actually died. Cables. Apparently they reproduce on their own anyway. Strings, picks, drumsticks, SD cards, storage, and other consumables. Repairs. Coffee.

During this year I agree to:

Finish songs instead of collecting presets. Learn the instruments I already own. Read the manuals I confidently assumed I didn't need. Sample my own gear instead of buying someone else's samples of similar gear.

Spend more time recording than researching. Spend more time practicing than watching YouTube reviews. Create limitations on purpose instead of purchasing new possibilities.

If I feel the irresistible urge to buy something because it is inspiring, etc ...I will wait 30 days. And if I still genuinely need it after 30 days, I will revisit the decision. If the urge disappears, I will celebrate the money saved and finish another song.

At the end of this year, my success will not be measured by the size of my studio. It will be measured by the music I made with it.

Signed,

A recovering Gear Acquisition Syndrome enthusiast
