[Request] How many revolver bullets do you need to shoot to get a passenger train to its normal speed?

For context, this is a comment on this video where a guy says you shouldn't be putting loudspeakers on foam pads, because when you do that, during transients the foam will give, and therefore the speaker will move, creating a distortion in the tone.

Given the gun is a Smith & Wesson Model 29, "the most powerful handgun in the world", how many bullets would you have to shoot to get a normal sized passenger train to its normal cruising speed?

Is this what alu laser welds just look like?

I've recently come across this youtube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMGhP3s91iw

the guy says he gets these results without doing anything special.

Is this just what those welds end up looking like even for newbies, or is that guy a super experienced welder who's just trying to sell people on it?

I have to say those welds look super impressive, but I also don't know if they are actually good, since I have never done any laser alu welding myself.

Thanks!

Experimenting with Music Thing Modular Radio Music as a sequencer

I’ve been having a lot of fun with Radio Music lately, and wanted to see how it would do as a kind of sequencer (or maybe…voice to be sequenced).

I loaded it with individual bass notes from a CS-80 and some silent samples to create rests. The Turing Machine makes it jump around between notes, and I’m adjusting the voltage amount and which sample the Radio Music is originally set to.

Weirdly, the sample play times vary beyond what it’s clocked at, so I’m not sure what’s going on there, but I think it sounds promising so far…

Finally "won" the game!!

Man, I got hooked on this game since I first tried it. Then for a while it was kinda middling because I didn't have the nice rings unlocked... then I really hit it crazy style. I had like dozens (maybe more than a 100) dice every time I rolled thanks to the combination of rings... my planet ring got to like 1.5k pips, that means I rolled 1.5k dice with face 1-3... that's kind of crazy. I just wish I had gotten a single vampire die, i'd have put it on the friendship ring (i ended up not using it for anything). with vampire this would be absolutely insane. I ended up having more than 200 dice so the multiplier and the extra die rolls really went hard. The only regret is the 2nd ring from the right, that doubles a single die's extra value. It's pretty much useless in this build, and also once you get a lot of dice it's just broken (UI doesn't work) ... I bet it's good for other runs, but useless here. I played on steam deck so I only used the controller UI and it glitched out.

I got a sound design job! Whoop..Might be my 10th analog synth

If you know me, then you know I have multiple coaches (6 to be exact) and over 9 synths! And I got a sound design job! Designing sounds for a platform! What a big W! Gonna use all the skills i developed from my 9 synths to make dope sounds

Reminder to everyone, owning synths is fun 🙌🏿

Polysynths: 8 voice or 16 voice?

Let's say you're making/buying a polysynth. You can make it 8 or 16 voice. It's equally practical to do 8 or 16, it's not larger or bulkier, the 16 voice costs 25% more, it doesn't do multitimbrality, so there's only one sound coming out of it at any time. What do you choose, and why?

What markup would 16 voice have to be over 8 voice where you'll say it's not worth it anymore? Ranging between 0% and 100%.

Thanks!

Massive migraine due to slipped disc

Woke up Thursday with a massive migraine. One of the worst ones ever. Normally when I get a migraine it's just a headache, it might be hammering, i might even have trouble seeing out of one or the other eye, but I take a small dose of triptans and it works. Well, not this time. On top of a massive headache, I couldn't see out of one eye, had vertigo, my teeth hurt, my whole back hurt and my neck was stiff, and I felt really sick to my stomach, I didn't know whether I should go vomit or just pass out on the spot. I took my sumatriptan, didn't work. I took 3x the usual dose in total eventually plus a naproxen plus coffeine and still nothing, not one step down in the severity of the pain or discomfort.

Well, as it turns out, it was because I went extra large grocery shopping the day before that. I went to one store, then to another. There are a few details to know here: first of all, I live in a walkable city, so not using a car. Both stores are in my neighborhood, about 5 minutes away from each other. Second off, I don't use shopping carts. The air here is very dry and there's a lot of wind so the massive metal buildings they put grocery stores in over here get charged up and I keep getting electrical shocks if I use a cart, so I just use the shopping bags to carry my stuff around. And I'm a very slow shopper. So in total I've been carrying heavy bags around for a few hours.

During the day my hips were clicking so that told me that I probably carried around way more than I should have. I put some pressure on my hips and adjusted that, but then my knees and ankles needed alignment. It's all one muscle and tendon pulling on the next one, so if one thing gets put where it should be the next one starts complaining...

Over the course of the day I also tried adjusting my neck, but that didn't help with the any of the pain I was experiencing. I also tried adjusting my jaw (by pulling on it hard, which usually works if I have a tooth ache related to that needing to be done) but that didn't so anything either.

I tried laying down, I tried taking a bath (didn't help but it's where my hips clicked into place at least), I tried walking around, I tried everything.

At the end of the day I started getting a really bad neck pain with a back pain. I started doing posture exercises and specifically focusing on being very straight and where my shoulder blades are. I started noticing that something's not right between my right shoulder blade and my spine, so I focused on that. Bending my back around, sitting in various different weird poses, I eventually found one where my back pain went away, so I kind of just stayed like that for a while, maybe a half hour while watching tv, literally reclining there in my chair while bent to the side. Then I resumed posture exercises, and it seems like i managed to get the part of my spine around my shoulder blade straight, by pushing in what I assume was a slipped disc, with the shoulder blade. You can essentially use your arms as a lever to make the shoulder blade adjust your spine. Then I laid down in bed.

5 minutes after that, all my pain and discomfort went away.

So, yeah. Turns out a slipped disc can really mess you up.

Hey eXtremeRate, could you make this please?

I know there are many options currently for replacing the back paddles on the Steam Deck with taller ones, but nothing quite as nice as the Elite controller paddles. Could you guys make this thing please?

Here's my original post on SteamDeckModded: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeckModded/comments/1v3kh63/steam_deck_elite_controller_paddle_mod/

It seems like people generally like the idea, given the amount of upvotes this got. It seems like the plastic part would be pretty small, so maybe you could make something like that without a lot of effort. I can see it requiring a little bit of electronics though, at least for a switch PCB, and an FPC to contact the original switch area. Or maybe you can make it some sort of lever system. IDK. Anyways, it would be awesome to have something like this :) It would be an instant buy from me!

Steam Deck Elite Controller Paddle Mod?

Has anyone ever tried to do a mod to use the Elite Controller paddles instead of the ones on the Deck?

I know of the various different paddle replacements you can do on the deck, such as taller paddles etc, but none of them are really as good as Elite paddles. So I was thinking about maybe putting them on the Deck in some way.

PS I don't care about portability or losing them, I only use my Deck at home.

What are some of the lowest-wattage computers that'll run SteamOS and simple Steam games like Balatro?

Curious what's out there. Would love to hear suggestions!

Looking for a good way to make a hole for this connector

Hey all, I'm looking to install the 8 pin pcie connector on the back of some rack mount devices. It'll have to go through roughly 1mm ish steel. I want to install the "with ears" variant as seen in the top right corner, and I think the proper cutout is on the bottom left, but I'm fine with it just being a rectangle. I'm looking for some method that'll do a good job, I have to do about 10-20 of these and I want to do a nice, clean looking job. The metal is already painted... I would really really like it if I didn't have to repaint it afterwards, as it has legends on it. For this reason it's important that it doesn't warp while being cut. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Looking for voltage regulator IC recommendations for high quality audio processing

Hi all, I'm in the process of converting a bunch of studio equipment (rack modules for mic and sound processing) to DC input. The transformers in those things are audible within a very quiet room, and they heat it up, and that's why I'm doing the conversion.

Pretty much everything is a run of the mill 7815/7915 design for -15, 0, 15V, and no unit uses more than around 300-500 mA. I want to feed each rack unit a higher dc voltage (say -18, 0, 18V) from a single ~100W toroid based power supply with a rectifier and some adequate regulation, and then use internal regulation in each rack to regulate the last volt. I got the idea to upgrade the internal DC-DC regulation (it'll be a completely different board bypassing the internal PSU anyways), and I've been asking myself what linear regulators I'd use.

LT3045/LT3094, LT3041/LT3099, and TPS7A4701/TPS7A3301 came up when searching Mouser, but I haven't had much luck finding many others. I would be grateful if someone could suggest some other chips, or maybe some designs using LT3045/LT3094. The main objective is ultra low noise, then great regulation, and then for it to be around $5-20 per unit.

I would appreciate any suggestions, projects to look at, etc.

Converting rack mount to DC input?

Hi all, Beside my head I have my mic processing rack with a bunch of preamps, voice strips, EQs, etc. I'm in a very quiet room, and the transformer buzz is audible, which is undesirable for my kind of work. I've been wondering if anyone ever tried converting their analog racks to DC input, and how that went. All the racks I'm talking about are internally running at +15,0,-15V rails, so I could just have a single linear (or even high quality SMPS) power supply, distribute it via XT or XLR style connectors, and have simple filter boards inside each unit that filter the incoming DC, with switch to disconnect the mains PSU and connect the DC board. I was wondering if this is a good idea in general and in particular how this relates to issues like ground loops and EMI pickup. My run from the DC power supply to the rack would be about 2-3 meters long, but it would be running parallel to some digital cabling. I would also be interested in suggestions on connectors to use, especially if I want to make daisy chain cables that go from device to device.

I would appreciate suggestions / experiences on the topic.

Thanks!

Is it possible to combine these two monitor arms?

I would like a very long extension arm for my two monitors (30" and 27"). Nothing like that really exists, but I wonder if it would be possible to combine a long-reach wall mount for a TV (this one is up to 104cm extension) plus two monitor arms like on the right, somehow weld a holder for the mounting turret on the right, to the arm on the left, or something like that - any ideas? Does this have a chance of success?

And a question if anyone knows - I would actually like the first arm (on the left) to be above the height of the displays, and then have the arms on the right drop down to the desired level. I've never used arms like that for displays, so I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on that. Do those normally have to be reconfigured somehow? Do I need to get special ones that are meant to go downwards rather than upwards? Do I need to set up some springs?

BTW the main reason I am looking at combining arms and not looking for some very specific super long reach arm is that that would probably be super expensive while the two items above can be found locally second hand for just a few bucks in any amounts.

Thanks a lot!
