Diamond Johnson: The Drummer Behind Beyoncé, Tems and The Kid LAROI

Diamond Johnson has been the drummer for some of the biggest names in music right now. He's toured with musical legends like Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Tems and Gunna and brought his drumming to the big screen on soundtracks like Moana 2 and Sing 2.

But what makes Diamond stand out isn't just his astounding credits, it's his innate energy he brings to every room he’s in. He’s charismatic, full of life and deeply rooted in the music he grew up with. He learned to play at the Evangelistic Centre in Kansas City, where he watched George “Spanky” McCurdy tear through Tye Tribbett & G.A.'s “No Way (The G.A. Chant)”, which ultimately became the spark that ignited his drumming obsession.

He walks us through some of his biggest career milestones: playing "My House" in huge arena tours with Beyoncé, becoming the musical director for The Kid LAROI and playing his first ever Tiny Desk with Tems.

He also gives us a behind-the-scenes look into his “unconventional” pre-show warmup routine, shares what he'd tell every drummer at any stage of their learning journey and leaves us with a poignant yet beautiful statement on what being a drummer means to him.

Joey Waronker: The Drummer Behind Beck, Elliott Smith and Oasis

Recently, we had the amazing opportunity to sit down with drummer Joey Waronker, who’s been the drummer behind acts like Beck, Elliot Smith, Oasis, Roger Waters… the list goes on! I knew he was a brilliant drummer, but after seeing this video for the first time, I realised “brilliant” didn’t even begin to cover it. The way he talks about drumming, you can tell it’s not just a part of him but its his entire being. Did I mention his studio is a literal drummer’s heaven?! The amount of instruments he’s collected over the years is truly insane yet completely aspirational. One of his stories in particular about working with Elliot Smith is worth the watch alone. Would love to hear what people think, especially if you're familiar with his work.

A lot users never use Memory Mode. If you haven't tried it yet, you should.

Once you play a lesson perfectly and earn your platinum stars Memory Mode unlocks. As you play the right notes the screen goes completely black. No notes, no guide, nothing scrolling past.

It's uncomfortable the first time but once you get used to it you really improve your playing and start earning the black stars!

Someone in our Discord went back to Grade 1 and repeated every single lesson in Memory Mode before moving forward. Their words:

"It used to scare me. The fear of forgetting the next part used to tetanise me. But eventually this fear literally disappeared. The brain finds a way to store this unspeakable flow of notes and gestures. You get so much freedom after that."

At the start even the early lessons feel hard again when the screen goes black. Start low, it's worth it.

Has anyone else tried it? How many black stars do you have?
