How do you go from texting to long calls and video calls with a female friend?

I was reading a book where the author described how two people met and slowly got close, but then he summed it up in one line: “and now calling and video calling each other had become normal.”
It made me wonder, how do you actually reach that stage? How does a friendship go from texting sometimes to casually having long calls and video calls without it feeling weird or forced?
For those who have experienced this with a female friend, how did it happen for you? Did it just happen naturally over time?
