I stand corrected on Auto Stereos

I have long said and as recently as the last few months that I never understand why ppl want a customer car stereo. My position was: it's a car. Too much road and engine noise to appreciate it. I have a M3 Highland with the base stereo system.

Just purchased a new Lexus hybrid for my wife. It has the Mark Levinson system. She didn't want the pay $1100 for it, but if you know Lexus hybrids right now. You take what you can find. So, it's a Luxury model NX350h with the Mark Levinson. The "B&O" standard speaker offering in my M3 is VERY SIGNIFICANTLY better than the Mark Levinson.

May be due to a quieter motor. Less road noise. Better speakers. But, even without a subwoofer, the Tesla base system is much better.

EVolution Classic 4 Dash Removal and More...

I have a Classic 4, Home Assistant, RATGDO (garage door automation). I've assembled an ESP32 mini solution for connecting to WiFi with YAML code to toggle the door open on arrival and closed on departure. The ESP32 connects to Home Assistant via MQTT via WiFi (static IP)...yada, yada, yada. All is working well. I'm using the top USB port that powers on with the cart key position.

I'd prefer to not have the USB cable hanging out of the dash and prefer hiding it. Has anyone used the 12V to 5V for USB devices hidden under the dash or seat? If so, any recommendations on where and how you accomplished this are appreciated.

I'm thinking of removing the dash and finding where I might retrieve power, BUT if I have any need to access the ESP32, I have the burden of removing the dash again.

TIA

M3 Highland Wipers

I know many people have complained about the wipers and that’s usually with wiping on a dry windshield. Honestly, I’ve only had that happen a couple of times in my 13 months of ownership.

But last weekend I was driving back from the Island in the Low Country in one of those infamous 1-2”/hr downpours. Rain was coming down in sheets. The harder the rain; the slower the wipers. Rain slows somewhat; the faster the wipers. It was dangerous.

The wipers slowed to the point I could not see well enough to pull off the road.

CAT6 RJ45 Male Issues

Sorry if this is a replicate, I did search and didn't see it.

Home network guy here. Have built very many Ethernet cables over the years. Experiencing a unique issue....for me. I have had several RJ45 male connectors that I just expended. Bought new ones and they don't fit into the female RJ45 connections on my two testers, patch panels, hubs, switches (even a new switch). All of the new ones are too tight. I have several CAT6 patch panel cables that fit as expected.

I have 23AWG CAT6 UTP 4-pair cable. Using CAT6 RJ45 8P8C TIA/EIA‑568 standard connectors. I stopped by the local electrical shop. Had 4 of the techs looking at it. Even their new male connectors would not fit into their brand new CAT6 patch panels. A full-time professional tech (READ: one that does if for a living) walked-in and was shaking his head. Even pulled some of his from the truck. They didn't fit either.

Finally, he forced one in and said, I guess these Chinese connectors are over the high spec tolerance. You just need to push really hard to force them in. Now, as an engineer, while this seems plausible on cheap manufacturing molds wearing out, I sure don't like the idea of forcing connectors with a risk to breaking the connection in a hub/switch/tester/patch panel.

What am I missing here?

Home Assistant + RATGDO + Fleet API Questions

So, I was mistakenly under the impression that Home Assistant + RATGDO + Tesla Fleet API would functionally replace MyQ. I've investing a day on the final integration. HA works fine. RATGDO works fine. I had built a dual geo-fencing ring for an outer zone entry and arrival zone entry with logic on drive state and Bayesian confidence. But, apparantly, according to Claude, the Tesla Fleet API only provides cloud polling every 10 minutes for the Tesla's location and this solution will not work.

I'm still investigating, but curious if anyone has this combination working without a service like, Teslemetry?

Guard DNS & Netgear Nighthawk

I decided to install an ad blocker and opted for AdGuard. I have DHCP on my Nighthawk X4S with the DNS Server being AdGuard. It seems the X4S continues to intercept the DNS control regardless. I’m trying to run AdGuard in a docker container. Now, in the midst to move AdGuard to host mode but not having success.

Any suggestions?

Grok: Exceeds Usage

I was driving my M3Highland today and have been using Grok voice commands for my navigation. It's worked well for weeks. Today, after providing an errored two destination trip for errands, I asked for a correction and I was shutdown because I have exceeded my alloted usage. Never had that happen. It was my first trip in 2 days in the car and only my 2nd request.

So, I asked Grok on the iPhone and she responded that I need to wait an hour or perform a soft boot. Soft boot didn't work. Didn't reset in a couple of hours.

Anyone else ever experience this and what's up? Not a good Grok demonstration while driving my M3.
