Slow Ethernet speeds despite paying for 1000 mbps — need advice

Hey guys, hope everyone’s doing well. This is my first time posting in here, but I was scrolling and everyone seems pretty chill and people have gotten their issues resolved, so hopefully I can have the same outcome.

So basically, we have AT&T Wi-Fi at home — I believe it’s fiber since download and upload speeds match. We’re on the 1000/1000 plan. I have my own PC work/gaming setup (one PC, two monitors), and since my room is pretty far from the router, I had someone come install an Ethernet run from the router that goes outside the house, along the outer line under the roof (so it stays dry), secured with zip ties, then comes into my room and connects to a small box with Ethernet plugins that I connect my devices to.

When everything first got set up, I was getting around 940-950 down/up on Ethernet in my room, and everything was running smooth. Yesterday my internet felt off — I was downloading a game on Steam and it was going way slower than usual. I ran a speed test and got around 80 upload, 90 download.

I’m not totally sure how long this has been happening, since I only ran the speed test yesterday. I’ve been busy and hadn’t played any games in a while, so I was just doing normal tasks and never noticed. The only reason I caught it was because the game download was taking way longer than usual.

Since we’re still paying for the 1000 plan, I checked my mom’s phone and it still tested at 1000. I checked my Ethernet cable and everything looked fine — even the adapter settings on my computer showed the link speed as 1000/1000 receive/transmit. So the connection itself seems fine, I’m just not getting the speeds I’m paying for.

I contacted AT&T and they said we have too many devices on the Wi-Fi. I get that, but we’ve had roughly the same number of devices (around 40) since I first got the plan — and it’s not all computers, mostly phones, a few TVs, iPads, and laptops that get used here and there, not constantly streaming or downloading. I’m the one who uses the internet the most, which is why I had the Ethernet setup done in the first place since I work from home.

Shouldn’t being on Ethernet bypass the device cap and still give me close to my 900s, even if the 1000 plan is designed for around 20 devices max? For reference, my mom’s phone gets around 900 on a speed test, but my phone gets the same low 80-90 as my computer.

Is there anything I can do to prioritize my computer, or figure out what’s actually causing this?

Thank you

Solution ideas for lightning

Hi, I'm designing a network setup for my new house. I'm from Malaysia and lightning is a big issue more than 200days per yr avrg.

The plan:

https://preview.redd.it/wfbqz2nnodkh1.png?width=1624&format=png&auto=webp&s=123825a9a67e7c1b2d241397c98a46cdf3b7a9b4

  1. Cat 6a cables. Modem by ISP (can't be changed).

  2. Cables run through the attic and drop down through walls.

  3. There will also be 6+ Lan ports in other rooms.

  4. CCTV camera surrounds the house exterior (main concern for lightning).

Solution/Problems:

  1. Surge protector grounded. (What's the recommended rating? And maybe recommended product for server rack)

  2. Seperate the cameras with a different router(sacrificial) that will directly connect to the DMP using fiber optic. (Is this a good idea?)

  3. Running cable through conduit in the attic. - Does running the cables through the attic cause issue with lightning considering the high occurance in my country. If so what are the other solutions other than coverting all to fiber optics(I don't think it is a viable option).

  4. Is there any other possible issues I'm missing. Would appreciate if it is noted down and even better if it comes with solutions.

Thanks in advance. The networking plan above is still in progress. I am expecting changes but wanna solve the lightning issue so I can notify the builders in time for any possible changes.

We are getting 8 mbps in a 500 mbps plan

Hi everyone, we are in a small office with a maximum of five people working here. When the office was rented, the setup in the picture was already installed.
We currently have a 500 mbps internet plan but we’re only getting around 8 Mbps download and 8 Mbps upload. I’m pretty sure the issue isn’t related to Wi-Fi.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how we can fix it?
Also, if you have the time, I’d really appreciate it if someone could explain what all these devices actually do 😂
Thank you all!

How to get good WiFi while gaming

My router is in the living room but I play my game in the bed room.

My game works best when plugged into the router directly like a wired connection.

I do not have a coaxial or Ethernet wall jack in my room so I cannot move the router in my room.

Any advice?

WiFi connected but not working

I have reset the ip in command prompt, rolled back driver versions, WiFi says connected and secured yet still no internet, could it be my modem? Or is it something else? Thanks!

Crazy idea not sure if it will work

I need to run an AP in my house and prefer not to drill a hole in the wall. Yes I know that's the easiest route but wanted to see if this is possible. Its my understanding that flat line ethernet is not best for POE runs. My idea is having the AP placed where I need it. Then run a flat ethernet cable no less than 10ft from the ap into a POE switch. Then run a regular cat6 cable going to my main switch.

Will this run? Any possibility that running the poe to my main switch cause any issues with my main switch.

AP ---- Flat Ether --- POE switch ----- cat6 to main switch

TPLINK SWITCH - TL-SG1005P

At church, we have a TPLINK SWITCH - TL-SG1005P connected to our Comcast modem. It feeds an access point in same building, and another access point in a 2nd building. We have burned out two of these switches. Yet another backup spare switch seems to work just fine. I think that the spare is a NETGEAR 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch. I substituted the NETGEAR in for a week or two when the first TL-SG1005P burned out. When we planned this whole system with our IT consultant, we planned and designed to prevent surge issues from happening. We have an APC surge/battery powering modem and switch. We have ethernet cable surge protectors (grounded ONLY on the upstream end). The outdoor ethernet cable is buried and not near underground A/C cables. We have NO outdoor ethernet devices. The 2nd building access point has its OWN power injector, so the cable to the second building is using the NON-POE port on the TL-SG1005P. The TL-SG1005P sits directly on top of a metal file cabinet, so it should NOT get too warm. BUT, it always felt a little warm. Both TL-SG1005P units burned out in their first month or two. We have NO steeple. NONE of the ports on the second TL-SG1005P light up at this point, so I am returning it to our supplier. I could hire an electrician to double check any voltage differences between the two buildings:

  • Ground-to-ground voltage
  • Neutral-to-ground issues

If I cannot avoid switch burnout, I may ask the board to let us install fiber between the two buildings, as our IT consultant recommended this at the start to avoid surge issues. But this will be a lot of work. Might a dirfferent brand, more expensive switch, be helpful here? Any suggestions? Thanks. Rick.

If I purchase a WiFi extender and plug an ethernet chord into it, will it produce more consistent connections (Not necessarily faster connections) that don't create as much net jitter while I play games or is it not worth it?

Exactly in the title

Problemi connessione ethernet

Wifi works but Ethernet Doesn't

Hi all, my Telstra 5g modem has appeared to have stopped working in a way. I logged into my modem via the ip address and changed my password on the modem. My wifi works but all my devices connected via a Ethernet cable has stopped working. Is there a way to solve this issue?

Ethernet speed stuck at 100 Mbps on Gigabyte B460M D2VX SI (Realtek GbE) after reinstalling drivers offline. Any fix?

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue where my PC's Ethernet connection is stuck at 100 Mbps instead of 1.0 Gbps.

This happened once before, but updating the driver fixed it back then, and it ran fine until now. Today the issue came back.

Here is what I've tried so far:

Followed the offline driver reinstallation guide: downloaded the official Realtek LAN driver directly from Gigabyte's support page for my motherboard (Gigabyte B460M D2VX SI).

Unplugged the LAN cable and disabled Wi-Fi completely.

Uninstalled the old driver via Device Manager (checked "Delete the driver software for this device").

Restarted the PC (still offline) and installed the downloaded official driver.

Reconnected the cable.

Unfortunately, it's still stuck at 100 Mbps. My NIC is a Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller, which definitely supports 1 Gbps.

Has anyone encountered this issue on Gigabyte boards or Realtek GbE controllers? Could this be purely a hardware issue (damaged cable/pins) or is there another Windows / BIOS setting I might have missed?

Thanks in advance!

Not getting 1 gig speeds on my PC through ethernet

Just recently I added a wifi booster to my home to boost wireless speeds to my office, however, my office is situated past a hall way with our water heater tank so the signal was being blocked. I live in apartment which only has one coaxial cable in the living room so there's no way to move the modem either. At that point I hooked up an ethernet cable from my modem directly to my PC but its still not receiving anywhere close to the 1 gig speeds I should be getting.

I have a prebuilt Omen 30L PC that I bought in 2019, no parts have been swapped out as of yet as I haven't found the need to since I dont do heavy gaming. After running tests, my speeds only go up to anywhere between 20-200 mbps instead of the 900-940 mbps I should be getting through a wired connection. I originally had a flat cat8 cable (I know it was a scam) but then I switched to a Cable Matters cat 6a ethernet cable and ran the speed tests again and still receiving the same speeds. Next I switched out my modem as it was 3 years old at that point and thought maybe the ports broke. None of them did and speeds are still the same.

I'm at a loss on what to do next. I figured maybe buying a new wifi card and ethernet port for my PC but at this point I dont want to keep spending money without knowing what the problem is and how to fix it. Anyone have any tips or other things I could try to get the speeds I should be getting?

Internet connection over LAN gone regularly

Hello people, my brother and I live in the top floor with a router used as an extension for the router below in the living room.

We both experience connection loss every 4-5 minutes for about 5-10 seconds. We use completely separate PCs. This is especially annoying while gaming because then we both disconnect every time. This started happening about two weeks ago.

We live in Germany and use 1&1 as provider.

Please ask further question if you could help us.

Edit: We both use Ethernet

Edit2: This doesn't happen with WiFi connection but the WiFi isn't stable in general so this isn't an alternative.

Need help - "Cant reach DHCP server"

Hey hey people of reddit, I was hoping that the ancestral posts of people on this subject would help me fix the issue but nothing seems to be working.

For context, the ethernet connection was working fine and dandy (for more than 1.5 years now without any such persistent issues), and despite no restarts, shut downs or anything, the title message has simply popped up and decided to make itself home...

What puzzles me even more is the fact that nobody mentions the issue message changing back and forth from "no cable detected" to "can't reach DHCP Server".

The network driver is Realtek Gaming 2.5GbE Family Controller, and I also have the WiFi Module, but the connectivity of it is iffy due to the location of the router so i want to fix the ethernet.

To add to the context, a list of things that have been tried from my side:

  • Ipconfig release and renew, neither worked
  • Multiple restarts of the router and PC
  • Shutting off all electronics connected to the WiFi
  • Trying a manual re-rout of the IP so the PC has a more direct line (doing it with no prior IT experience, when it showed no results immediately restored previous settings)
  • Checked DHCP services settings, all is working there
  • Restarting the network card (if that's the name of it, sorry)
  • Checking the Ethernet cable via connecting it to another device. (the cable works)
  • Reset the damn cmos, still didn't do anything.

And there's also the weird "issue" of the Ethernet light blinking yellow twice in rapid succesion and then dropping completely.

Would love to get some insights from people smarter than me!

EDIT: Solved! Thanks to a suggestion i tried re-pinning the cable from my PC to a laptop, who showed no problems connecting to the ethernet and once i tried connecting it back to the PC to write that the cable is not the issue, it just connected to the ethernet? No clue what helped...

EDIT 2: UNSOLVED! Despite everything going back to normal, this morning when booting the PC it once again decided to die, looking for new solutions; added most recent step to the "tried" list.

EDIT 3: ???? Randomly connecting the PC directly to the router via the same "faulty" cable forced it to connect properly, and when i moved to connect the cable once again to the usual extender port, it worked like usual. No clue what the fix was, hope I will never have to think about it ever again.

Heavy Delayed feeling in all gaming applications!!

So I have a serious input delay/inconsistent internet connection issue while being wired into my devices via ethernet cable. At first i began to think it was just the servers to the video games that I am connecting to, but shortly found out after visiting multiple friends that have the same internet as me this was untrue. Modem is a Netgear CM1000 and router is a Netgear RAX45. One thing I notice is that the downstream light on my modem is constantly blinking but the internet connection is working. Outside of this I dont have much more information but i would really appreciate some help on troubleshooting this issue. The ethernet cables are Cat6 btw.

Trying to figure out what sort of wall socket this is

Question in the title

Breakdown of what I do know.
- Wall socket has 8 contact pins
- Cable jack has 8 contact pins with 4 connecting wires
- To my knowledge, the cable is an RJ45 (it’s previous use was for security cameras if that changes context at all)
- The cable jack is too wide for the socket

Things I do not know yet:
- It’s previous use (in a rental so I need to verify with landlord about previous use)
- Is it powered (would like to exhaust all options before going out and buying another cable just to test one thing)

Answers I don’t have access to:
- Is it connected / Where it leads to (I am unable to access the part of the house that it would be connected to)

One one hand, it could be an Ethernet port that just has a really weird socket, it could be a cable that has a really weird jack, or it could just not be an Ethernet port at all
