Soil Mix for Solanum Dulcamara

I recently obtained some Solanum Dulcamara, and need to pot it up. My research online had left me with the conclusion that it wants a “loamy, well-draining, yet moisture retaining” mix. However, I have been unable to find any actual recipes. I have at my disposal regular potting soil, peat moss, perlite, and LFSM. I could buy other kinds of media if needed. I live in zone 9B. Could you please recommend a media mix recipe, and if you have any further tips, please share them! Thank you!

Brugmansia Troubles!

Help! My Brugmansia “Xena” that I recently got from the UCB Botanical Garden Sale appears to have a black speckling and odd holes with discoloration on the leaves. Furthermore, I’m afraid it’s spreading to my Iochroma Australe. The Iochroma was definitely not like this three days ago. (See last photo.) But, I believe the Brugmansia was. I obtained it recently, so it‘a been getting indirect light as I’ve been doing my research, and it has been watered to the proper amount. It is notable that there were ants living in the pot prior to being forced to evacuate. Can you guys please help me identify this and what I ought to do? Thanks in advance.

Care for A. Carmichaelii & Iochroma Australe

I just bought Aconitum Carmichaelii, Iochroma Australe, and Brugmansia “Xena” at a plant sale. My research online has yielded plenty for the Brugmansia, but I’m finding it hard to get info for the Aconitum and Iochroma, since both aren’t super widespread in the plant hobby. I’m wondering if anyone here has care tips for either? In particular, I’m wondering about temperature requirements, as I’m in zone 9B, as well as watering and light preferences, along with any species specific quirks I ought to know about. Thanks in advance.

Brugmansia Species/Hybrid Recommendation

I’m looking to purchase a Brugmansia soon, but I’m really unfamiliar with their cultivation. While my research has found cultivation advice, I cannot find much about the preferences of each species. If you guys could please recommend a species or hybrid for a beginner Brugmansia grower in zone 9B, it would be of great help. Thanks!

Experience with Companion Plants?

I’m wondering if anyone here has ordered live plants from Companion Plants. They appear to have a really nice selection of potted poisonous plants, and I’m thinking of buying a few. Are they reputable? For those of you who have ordered from them, what‘s your experience with the packaging and size? Thank you!

(I’m looking at A. Belladonna and D. Wrightii in particular.)

Experiences with Meadowview Research Station?

[Pictures unrelated.]

I was thinking of purchasing plants, specifically bog companions, but perhaps more carnivores as well, from Meadowview Biological Research Station after seeing them recommended on another post. I’d just like to ask the community directly, if you’ve ordered from here, how good were the plants in size, health, and packaging quality? I’d love to buy from a nursery supporting ecosystem conservation, but I would like to know these first. Thank you.

Solanum Dulcamara Help

Help! I took this cutting of S. Dulcamara more than two weeks ago, and it’s since developed these odd white specks on the leaves, along with a little bit of webbing. Are these mites? Also, it hasn’t been rooting despite having sun and being placed in water. What’s up with it? I’d really prefer not to lose these cuttings. Thank you.

Solanum Dulcamara Propagation

I took two cuttings of S. Dulcamara, plucked lower leaves, put it in distilled water, and gave it light. Did I do it right? They perked up again after being in water for a day, and look pretty good. I know to change the water every few days, but I don’t know how long I should leave it in this state. Has anyone had experience with this species before and can tell me how long it takes for it to root, and when to plant it in soil? Thanks in advance.

The SDCPS Show and Sale!

The SDCPS Show and Sale is a delightful event for anyone in Southern California. I got to meet a lot of cool people like Jeff Greene, and I purchased a lot of cool plants! Carnivorous Greenhouse was selling Amorphophallus Konjac, and there was a lot of live sphagnum moss for sale! All the Darlingtonia was quickly snatched within the first few minutes of opening, but there are still some great selections of Sarracenia, Utricularia, Drosera, Pinguicula, and more! I spotted some small Roridula for sale by the aforementioned Carnivorous Greenhouse, and Rainbow Carnivorous Plants had two gigantic tables of various Pinguicula, plus some great Utricularia! It’s still open tomorrow from 10:00 AM till 4:00 PM, with free admission. There’s a fun raffle taking place again with an absolutely massive Nepenthes in the prizes. Come on down!

Tip Burning on D. Binata

My Drosera Binata Multifida Extrema makes nice leaves that start out looking nice and dewy like Photo 1, then within some time, the tips will burn like in Photo 2. Eventually after a while, it comes to look like Photo 3. Photo 4 is my setup where I have a SANSI 40 watt grow light. I’m confused as to why the second newest leaf‘s tips burned, because I had increased the distance between the light and the plant. In fact, my largest D. Capensis looks a little etiolated because of it. Is it light stress? Is it heat stress? Is this just the growth pattern? Thank you.

“You know guys, I think I might have thrips.”

I just might have thrips. Maybe.

Can I use RTU Monterey Garden Spray on these to get rid of the little fools?

Strange Dream - Was It Sleep Paralysis?

I had an odd dream some time ago. It happened when I had woken up and promptly fallen asleep again. It was very strange. I was in a fixed position, like I was watching a movie. I saw the face of a decomposing corpse, very similar to the one pictured above from Kane Pixels’s “Autopsy Report”. I had first watched the video years ago, and the image of the corpse had haunted me for a while. However, at the time I had the dream, I had almost completely forgotten the corpse, and I was no longer afraid of it. Anyways, as the dream went on, I heard the voices and saw the shadowy movements of two men. I infer they were doctors or embalmers either conducting an autopsy or embalming the body. However, the corpse started to talk. It talked in a supremely annoying voice, comparable only to Donkey from ”Shrek”. He was saying some completely random stuff and talking to the two men, who did not respond. Eventually, the men apparently got annoyed with his talking, and put a sheet over his face. He promptly ceased talking. Seconds later, his face jumpscared me, and looked in my eyes as a myriad of voices repeated the phrase “black people” in unison. I do not mean this in any offensive or racist way. I am merely describing what I saw. This jumpscare was very intense due to the volume of the voices, and it made me very uncomfortable. Eventually, his face disappeared and I woke up. However, I had a moment after waking as the image faded away, where I felt I could not move. After that second was up, I was able to move again. The dream was rather short. What happened? Did the momentary paralysis signify sleep paralysis?

Advice on Splitting a Grow Chamber

I have one terrarium in which I grow my humidity-needing plants. The full tank is pictured in Exhibit B. Exhibit A is a more recent photo. I have since drastically improved conditions inside since the time Exhibit B was taken. There is an acrylic slab on top of the tank to keep the humidity in, which I lift every day to circulate before misting and closing it again. There is also a weak PC fan running in the tank all day every day to circulate air internally and lower the chance of mold and rot. The light has also since been upgraded sufficiently. The conditions right now are pretty lowland, with temperatures ranging from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. Humidity is around 90% on average. All my plants currently appear to be happy, except for N. x Briggsiana. I have come to the conclusion that this is due to the fact that it is being grown in lowland conditions, despite both its parents being highland plants. In order to optimize this setup and prepare for several intermediate/highland plants arriving in the near future, I would need to provide either a Goldilocks zone of conditions that would allow all three types of plants to thrive, or I could divide the tank into two microclimates. My current idea is to use safe silicone to glue a cut to size sandwich of acrylic, styrofoam, and acrylic once again. My research points towards both of these materials being decent insulators. One side of the tank would then be kept at lowland/intermediate conditions, and the other would be at highland. The lowland/intermediate conditions are created by the greenhouse effect trapping the heat emitted by the grow light, and the highland conditions would be created with use of something like a refreezable ice pack swapped out when day turns to night and vice versa. Is my planned setup likely to work? Am I creating an overly complicated setup with high effort required to sustain it? (Yes.) Has my life been consumed by this hobby? (Yes.) Please give me your thoughts. Thank you!

For further context, here’s a list of my current and soon to arrive tropical plants.
